28 - med skin, brown eyes, short brown hair « Thread Started on Sept 11, 2006, 11:38pm »
So the comments on the photos were a lot of "wow, 28 looks just like Marisol!" Now, I don't have Marisol, but I do have 28, and I absolutely love her.
Her hair is a blend of dark and light brown strands that falls just below her shoulders, with the same part as Marisol's. The hair on the left side of the part near her face is longer than on her right, which is rather cute and probably adds to the styling capabilities.
Her eyes are a nice dark brown - not so dark to be black, but very rich nonetheless.
I've noticed that in halogen lighting, as on the website photos, the lighter bits of her hair stand out, which makes her hair seem much lighter and very close to the skintone. But in daylight, her hair looked much darker.
Also, with her arrival in pigtails, her hair is rather stiff and clumpy along the part in the back, but I'm told that should get fixed with brushing.

Here she is still in her box. I am debating on whether to keep her or not. It looks like one of her eyes is a tad smaller and closer to her nose than the other one, but maybe its just my imagination?

Hubby and the kids just gave me the most wonderful Valentine's Day gift, a beautiful #28- She is one of the prettiest girls I have ever seen! I just adore her. I am so pleased with her creamy med. skintone, her deep brown eyes and her thick, gorgeous hair! I know we are going to have a lot of fun with her.

My Mary. I absolutely adore her. I think she's my prettiest doll (although Liz is still my favorite). I did notice, however, that her hair curled inward like a bob, not outward like a flip. I like this better and I am told it's common, but I've only ever seen it in Anna's pictures of #28. Her hair being brushed so close to around her face was done intentionally. I think it makes her look more shy and mature.

This is a photo of #28 with Marisol. Both have their hair pulled back into ponytails so you can see just how similar they are. Can you tell who is who? Claudia #28, is wearing the Sparkley Tunic Outift.

Do some versions of this doll have darker skin than others? In some she seems really really tanned, while in others she seems just slightly darker than JLY 25. Or is it just the camera/lighting?

C:Both.
Medium skinned dolls in general have the most variation in shades and 28 is no different.
Lighting also has more of an impact on the medium tones, for a variety of reasons, but especially because it's harder to *tell* when it is having an effect.
Like, a picture of Kirsten where she has WHITE skin, clearly is having too strong of a flash, but a picture of Josefina with too much of a flash will only make her skin lighter. Opposite works too. Too-dark picture of Addy is clearly too dark, while a too-dark picture of Josefina might just look really tan.

Mine's skin is noticeably dark, even darker than the #26 I had here visiting. Her skin is kind of tannish-olive colored. Mine may be darker than some of the others. My flash makes Mary look a little light in my sig, but she actually has kind of an orange-ish hue. She's really very pretty.

I got my Colette aka Coco in September.
Pros: A really sweet face. Hair doesn't get tangled. lovely skin tone.
Cons: Even though her hair doesn't tangle, it is constantly in her face. It seems to be rather thin in the back, possibly because she arrived in pigtails. She arrived with one stiff arm and one loose arm, but I'm sure that doesn't happen to everybody.
Grade: A-
An 8 year old will probably not mind the hair-in-face problem (especially because it can be pinned back with clips. I just thought it was worth mentioning). I think I could have waited a little longer to get her. I can't honestly say she looks different in person. What you see in pictures is what you get, to say the most.

My older daughter just bought this doll (so I am not breaking my no-new-dolls-vow!) and she is perfect for almost-eight-year olds who can't deall with hair. I have vowed that I will never get another (we have four!) curly or textured hair doll because I spend so much time every day with textured and curly haired girls!! Anyways, she adores this doll! #28 looks exactly like Marisol (so much so that I am thinking of selling Marisol!) except for the hair which is shorter. We really love the fact that she has the little hairs in back so that two ponytails don't look weird. We give #28 an A+!!

I love my Rebecca (28). she's my little princess, and is very spoiled. she looks cute in hot pink, any shade of pink, but especially that cute licorice dress with the leggings. The springtime sundress periwinkle color isn't good with her skintone. she can pass for many ethnicities. If you are thinking of getting her, do it! you won't regret it. She and Marisol are similar, but I think 28 is way cuter because I love her haircut. She's just a precious, favorite doll.

I bought a 28 at AGPLA this past Friday. I checked every box to get the lightest one possible. Her hands seem more tanned than her legs- I wonder if they were trying to exhibit a realistic tanning pattern. Her torso is certainly much darker than that of a light skinned doll.
The salesman helping me at AGPLA told me that 28 was an extremely popular doll. And it showed- there were fewer boxes of her than of any other doll I searched for.
Her hair seemed a bit clumped up at first, but now it is fine. It swings just the right way I wanted it to.
Overall, Gretchen is a very cute doll. She looks great in the clothes I put her in- the V-neck tee, denim skirt and pink hat from Mia's 2 in 1 outfit, white and fuchsia socks that came in the trio, and boots from the Adventure Outfit.
I give 28 an A and can easily tell why she is so tremendously popular.

I'm sure the reason they decided to come up with a doll so similar to Marisol is because she was so popular. Hence this doll's popularity. But that's my opinion... (I've named this doll Avery)
I wonder if they were trying to exhibit a realistic tanning pattern.
I highly doubt it. The dolls aren't made one at a time, with parts of each one molded separately. They grab parts from huge lots of medium-skinned limbs, heads, and torsos, then put in the eyes and wig to make her #28. I don't think they spend a lot of time mixing and matching the limbs and head to make sure they're all the exact same shade.

I've been able to do loads of hairstyles, but I've lost the blog post with photos.
I like best to do two pigtails, a single ponytail, or to pull bits of hair back from the front and secure with barrettes or bobby pins or the like.
I've also done two french braids, two regular braids, a half ponytail, which all took patience. And then I've done lots of styles that weren't really planned but made up as I went along, using twists and small braids and stuff. Last night I did a variation on the pony-veil that was really cute - one tiny braid from the hair next to the part at her forehead, a tiny braid further back along the part, and a tiny braid from the hair above her ear, then I pulled each of the three braids back and braided them together a short amount, then put in a barrette. I did that on each side and it was really cute.
Headbands - either the regular kind or tied ribbons - generally look really nice, too.

A+
I got my 28 today. She is our first brand new doll and the first non historical.
She is so beautiful. Rubie's skin tone is not very orange. more Olivey tan. I think we got a lighter one. Her eyes are really stunning and I love her hair. I have not taken it down yet but I am sure I will soon. She looks wonderful in the hot pink and grey meet outfit and also the Blue and lime from the Outdoor play set are very nice with her skin as well.
I don't think browns will look very good on her unless they are a red brown.
I have not run into any Cons yet but if I do I will edit

I got my Fiona awhile ago, but haven't posted a review yet. She is a very lovely doll. Her hair is easy to manage and her skin tone is beyond perfect! Heres my girl:
