Grace's Baking Set
Item# CGD21
Grace loves to invent new recipes, and this detailed set has everything she needs to whip up something wonderful! It features:
A shiny blue mixer that really spins at the touch of a button, with removable beaters and bowl
A sifter with a handle that turns
Pretend flour
A set of measuring cups
A pastry cutter
A wooden spoon
A baking booklet with real recipes inside
A pretend tablet with a built-in stand and pretend stylus pen for writing down ideas
Three interchangeable images that slide into the tablet to look like different baking websites
$68
Box. It does not stay closed well I noticed a lot of them didn't seem to in store either.
Luckily, the pieces are fairly secure inside.
All the pieces. At $68, I'm feeling a little cheated again. Most of the pieces are quite plastic or paper products. The mixer is so adorable though!
Mixer with attachments and bowl. The mixer is a nice, heavy duty plastic. It turns on to rotate the mixer attachments. It seems sturdy enough to hold up to normal play. The head lifts so that attachments can be changed. They are easy to change in and out and stay in place when inserted. Falling out shouldn't be an issue with repeated use. The bowl fits snugly onto the stand. It won't go flying when the mixer is turned on. This piece is absolutely the best part of the set. So adorable!
Plastic mixing bowl. It is thick, not flimsy. I know some mixing bowls are plastic, but in general, the ones that go with Kitchen Aid type mixers are metal. I wish this was metal. It's sturdy though, and fits well into the stand. Grace can actually hold it. Cute!
Attachments. Unfortunately, these are also plastic. But, they are also sturdy plastic. The white beater does not bend or give. Not metal, but also not poor quality. The "wire" beater is a little more flimsy, but again, not poor quality. Wire beaters tend to be a little less sturdy than the white version anyway. (What is that white thing actually called?) I love that the set has 2 beaters that can be changed. Plastic aside, this adds to the realism and the attention to detail I expect from AG.
The pastry cutter is plastic as well, bleh. It's tiny and cute and is a nice addition to the set. The doll can hold it, but not as well as some other pieces.
Sifter. I am so disappointed that this isn't a working sifter. The crank turns, which I like and am glad for, but the bottom is solid. The entire thing, except the wire in the crank, is plastic. I'm starting to accept that this entire set is plastic. I think.
Tablet. This is the piece I have the most mixed feelings about. On the one hand, yay tablet! However, even though I expected plastic, this is poor quality plastic. It feels very cheap and thin to me. I also do not like that the stand is attached. I can't have a doll hold it while relaxing in her room because the stand will look strange in pics. The one redeeming quality of this piece is that the pen does come out of the holder. However, it is incredibly difficult to remove, and I thought it would break before I decided to try sliding it up and out instead. This will end up broken if kids pull too hard. It pushes back in easily, and I don't plan on removing it again. At least it won't fall out and get lost! Still grumbling about the very cheap feel of the plastic. It's Barbie plastic. It even smells like Barbie plastic! The rest of the set doesn't have the funky plastic smell.
The screen inserts are cute and seem to be well made. They are plastic sheets. I don't think these will bend or tear easily while changing them out. They have more substance than laminated paper and sort of remind me of a driver's license, but not as thick as that. Maybe like one of those plastic sheets used on an overhead projector? Do people still use those?
Flour box. It's card stock type paper and will be easily bent or smushed. I do like that it has the weight in pounds and kilos on it. Nice detail there.
Wood spoon is wood! Yay! This is my second favorite piece in the set! Holy moly do I love the wee wooden spoon! Cute cute cute!
The baking magazine is adorable and is another favorite from the set. It has several pages, all of which can be read if you have good eyes or a magnifier! The paper is high quality glossy paper, just like a real magazine. Super cute!
Wee measuring cups! The set is held together by a plastic band, but it does come off. They nest together well and are not clumped, thankfully. I did not take them out of the nest because I'm visiting my parents and will be traveling soon. Didn't want to risk losing them. They are decent quality plastic. They do not have any measuring indicator lines or any details like that, but they're still really cute.
Grace is stirring up some cupcakes! This was taken using flash.
No flash.
Over all, I think this set is seriously adorable. It's one of my favorites from her collection when I base it on appearance only. However, I do think it is very, very overpriced at $68. I would feel slightly uncomfortable buying this set for a small child who may lose some of the smaller pieces and even felt a little uncomfortable buying it for myself. It this were priced at $44 or $48, I'd feel much better about it. The working mixer does not add $20 to this set. My only issues with the set are the very cheap plastic feel of the tablet and the price of the whole.
