Lanie is very cute. Her sidebangs look much nicer in person than in the AG photos. I also think that her hair looks less like a wig in person. The blonde is VERY blonde and it has brown highlights. She is very similar in appearance to just like you doll 21. Overall I would give the doll an A. As far as the oufit goes, I think it's cute, but there should be more to it. I was deciding between three dolls and all of their headbands had loose strings and were fraying. The shoes are adorable. Especially since she is supposed to be from New England, I wish that this outfit would work for seasons other than just summer. Overall, I would give the outfit a B/B+. *mod edit to fix code, resize photos*

Ok here's our pictures as well. Honestly her curls are a bit CRAZY! We've only been home for a few hours and DD10 has her in the salon chair for a brush down. We had loose strings on the headband that I had to cut off! The headband was really tight to get over her head. The bracelet which is a lot like the one DD10 got at Aeropostal it's a leather band with an earth bead in a shape of a heart.

The loose strings on the headband were not really loose strings. The hairnet was sewn to the head band which was sewn into the hair.

Does yours seem to have a slight dimple on the left side of her chin?

Lanie is quite an adorable doll, the dress is a thin cottony, T-shirt like material. Be careful taking off her hairnet, they have attached it with thread to her headband and at some points to her wig! Her hair is the same texture as Nicki's, but she seems to have more hair than Nicki did. So it is not too thin but not super thick either. It is also much curlier than I even expected, but in a nice way. I think those that had problems maintaining Nicki's hair will have an even harder time with Lanie's. Her eyes are the same hazel eyes as on Rebecca and #21. She wears dark blue underwear that matches the blue of her dress, with dragonflies on it as well. The meet shoes are like Keds slip ons - rubber sole and toe tip. Overall, the meet outfit is pretty sparse, dress, headband, underpants, and shoes, but they do look so nice on her. She has an overall preppy look to her. Her hair doesn't look as "fake" or shockingly platinum as the pictures AG has of her. Overall A- (minus for the sparse meet outfit, I put great importance on the meet outfit since most of my dolls save the JLYs, remain in theirs most of the time)

I was in American Girl NY, and loved all the Lanie displays. The doll was nice but didn't feel compelled to get her. She looked like my niece so my sister got her fro her daughter (my daughter ended up getting Ivy- she only has Julie & Samantha.)
Two comments to add besides all the great reviews she's already gotten... 1. After the store had only been open about an hour, we saw a girl (maybe 8 or 9) carrying around a Lanie that looked worn out already! This doll appears to be high maintenance and may not be your first choice if your daughter is tough on her dolls.
2. Her eyes aren't as green as they appear in the pictures where the flash is used or in the AG pictures. I think because the light has to be hitting them directly and brightly for them to truly shine.
Here is a link to all my pictures of Lanie from today at picasa:

Edited to add photos This is the first time ever that I've been certain so early in the year that I wanted a GoTY. Having read so many reports lately of dolls arriving with different length legs, loose limbs etc I was a bit nervous as I waited for Lanie to arrive. She came yesterday and I'm thrilled to pieces with her.
My Lanie, thankfully, is nicely balanced, stands beautifully and can sit pretty well too. (not leaning against the wall) She feels nice in the hands... Her joints move easily, don't squeak, creak or click as some others of my dolls' do, either. Interestingly (to me anyway!) the shipping box wasn't marked from Middleton, WI but Deforest (I think), WI.
She has the prettiest face and beautiful hazel eyes. Lanie's hair was kind of 'squished' into the hairnet but once that was carefully taken off (mine wasn't sewn anywhere thank goodness) and I fluffed her hair out a bit, it was fine.
BOY is her hair curly!! I noticed the wig has quite a lot of short pieces underneath, but not so many at the back where they would have been most useful. My Chrissa's wig is a bit like that too. Lanie's wig is not as thin as I was afraid it would be, though: I think if it was much thicker it would be hard to handle all those curls.
The headband is rather tight. I took it off to rearrange Lanie's sidebangs to my satisfaction and had trouble getting it back on. I'm glad I got the sparkly hair pick. I have the earlier not-so-wide red one that didn't seem useful at all, but I tried the new pick and it was fine. I really doubt I'll be doing alot of brushing/picking of Lanie's hair, but will most likely finger comb it. When I ordered Lanie, the first thing the CS said was, 'you know that she has curly hair and you will need to use a hair pick not a brush?'
Meet outfit: There's not alot of it, but it feels like good quality fabric. The dress is well made, nicely finished and looks crisp and fresh. The green and blue suit Lanie beautifully. The shoes are awfully cute and look like ones available in shoe shops for girls that age. It would have been nice if AG had given Lanie a jacket or something though.
I have to give Lanie a big A+++. This girl is just gorgeous.
My only other hazel eyed girl is Mia. Looking at them together I fancy that Lanie's eyes are slightly greener and Mia's slightly browner hazel. It could be a trick of the light, or the effect of the dolls' different colouring...or just my imagination. I'm not sure. I took a couple of comparison shots:

For your viewing pleasure, a comparison of JLY#21 and Lanie. I do think that Lanie has a bit of brighter green to her eyes, but not much. It actually looks a little brighter in person than this photo shows.

My Lanie finally came yesterday! *happy dance* I already love her to bits. Lanie meet 1 by Elizabeth, on Flickr Lanie meet 2 by Elizabeth, on Flickr Her meet outfit is so CUTE! I haven't had that much trouble with her headband. I've had it off and on a couple times. It's takes a bit of work to get it back on, but it's not that hard. For those of you that have had trouble, I think the elastic just needs to stretch out a bit. Lanie is my first curly haired doll so I'm still learning how to handle her hair. My favorite part about her right now is that you can fold the skirt of the dress up underneath to make it a shirt. DD's Lanie arrived last week. Her hair colour is lovely - very much like my eldest daughter's when she was young. I find the eyes more green than hazel, but they're very pretty. I don't like Felicity's vibrant green ones; these are far more natural. I echo what the others have said about the crazy hair; unlike others, I love the bangs, but it's crazy curly. This doll was purchased for an eight year-old; luckily she has a mother who likes fussing with doll hair. I would not buy this doll for a child and expect her to be able to manage that hair by herself. I end up separating and clipping the top half and then misting and picking the bottom. I then wrap sections around my finger and hold it a few minutes. After the bottom layer is done, I do the top. It looks lovely - until my daughter changes her the first time. It takes a lot longer to do Lanie's hair than DD's JLY39. The doll is lovely and my daughter loves her, but I wouldn't buy the doll for any child and expect her to cope with that mane! The hair is also very long - past her waist when straightened. I don't find the wig thin at all; any more hair and it would be a bush!

DD's Lanie arrived today and I am so thrilled with her. She and I both loved her right off, but she is absolutely more pleasing in person. The meet outfit is right on target for the age range (it's what DD would wear every day if she could) and I'm happy with it. It's soft and well made. LOVE her slip on "Keds" style shoes, again very nice. Her eye color and hair color combination make for a beautiful girl. I give her an A+.
This is with her hair just finger fluffed right out of the box:

I'm going to add this info. to the replacement parts wiki where it most probably belongs. But I found out by email that Lanie's dress and shoes are NOT available as replacement parts, just the smaller items.

I got Lanie yesterday, and quite frankly, I'm not as in love with her as I thought I'd be. Hopefully she'll grow on me. There's nothing wrong with the doll herself, but her hair is insanely curly, and since Sonali's wavy hair scared me, you can only imagine my terror at this girly's mass of ringlets. I'm not good with hair at all, and it makes me kind of afraid to take her outside and play with her, for fear I'll mess up the curls and never get them back the same way. But still, I find her much cuter in person than in the AG catalog, and I love her meet outfit and shoes. Grades: Doll - B Outfit - A+ Photos: Miss Lanie in her Meet, just out of the box: Back of her head (trying to show her hair color) And random photo out of the meet outfit:

I recently got Nessarose, my Lanie, and she is PERFECT! She looks like me, but she has a bump in her wig, which is not fixable. But at least it's a small bump, and you can just feel it when you pet her hair roughly. Her wig is a medium between thick and thin, but hers is a little on the thinner side with mine. She has bright hazel eyes that look gorgeous with and without flash on the camera. Her vinyl is light skin colored.

After two weeks of waiting patiently for Lanie, she has finally arrived and I'm so glad I ordered her. I must have gotten a "good" Lanie because my doll has a good wig that is easy to maintain with a doll hairbrush and a spritz of water. I've been playing with it for about three hours and it has been very easy to take care of (for now). Also, it is very thick, much thicker than my other curly haired dolls. I have no complaints about her being blond; she's my very first blond AG and I couldn't be more happier with her. Her meet outfit is adorable and very true to what girls are wearing right now, I suppose. I love her shoes as well. Overall I give her an A+ and would highly recommend her to anyone. Editing to add a photo. I've had Caroline (Lanie) for about six months and still love her to pieces. Her hair has held up well and looks exactly like it did when I received her. I'm very impressed.

I really love my Lanie doll a lot her meet outfit is adorable and right on with what girls her age today would wear. I do have a couple issues with the hair on my doll haven't decided if it's normal or not since shes my first doll but the ends of her hair are dry and frizzy and she had hairs all over that are way shorter that stick out when I put her hair up like inch long hairs or shorter.

I love this girl! I have renamed her Amelia. Her blonde hair is very thick and easily stylable, and her curls are to die for. Her hazel eyes look very exquisite with her blonde hair as well. She looks good in pretty much anything, and she's quite photogenic. There's nothing much to say about her, because she's such a beauty.
An overall A+ for Amelia/Lanie.

I ordered Lanie online in August of 2010. She's a gorgeous doll. Her hair is a beautiful color and the wig is nice and full. The curls are pretty and not difficult style. Her meet dress is made well and looks like something a 9 or 10 year old girl would wear. The shoes are very cute. I give Lanie an A+!

Miss Lanie arrived on Monday and she seemed just perfect from the quick peek I took before running off. I didn't have a problem with the hairnet and the headband, it came right off and there was no lose threads or anything. Her curls are a little scary, not going to lie on that one. I think her dress is rather skimpy for ...what, she's ten right? Or eleven? I mean, going by my mom's reaction when my twelve year old sister wears form fitting skinny jeans ..damn. Anyway, the doll is perfect in my eyes and I fell in love with her. The only fault I see is because of her hairstyle/wig there isn't much that can be done besides pigtails/ponytail or bun without having to worry about messing the curls and having to brush, comb, pick, recurl, whatever. I see her as the girl that NEEDS the headband, like whenever I play with Sam, she needs to have her hair pulled back in it's original style and Lanie needs to have a headband or a clip or something. Overall, I give her an A-, mainly because of her hair but don't get me wrong, she's WAYYY up there with my favorites

I ordered Lanie as my step daugther's just like you doll. (She still has a a little trouble reading so I thought getting a doll with books might be beneficial). I took the hairnet off and picked through her curls. (I had no problems with her headband except it being a little tight). I'm fairly certain that we'll be using Tink's techniques for cleaning up her hair. Her meet outfit is cute, but I especially like her shoes and dragonfly underwear. We have a bit of an obesession with dragonflies at my house! She is a beautiful doll, but not my favorite because she is a blondie.

Lanie doll: The most beautiful eyes ever! They are a dark olive green with little splashes of this beautiful lighter green. When I saw her online her eyes was the only thing I didn't like, but now they are my favorite eyes american girl has made. Her hair is sort of a julie blond, yes it is very light blond with these adorable brown highlights.I love that she doesn't have the "line" eyebrows because IMO feathered eyebrows are the cutest and most realistic. Her hair is very thick and easy to manage, (for me it could be different for you) but, it can take awhile if you are doing small curls, if you are doing banana curls it takes about two mintues. Her meet outfit is so adorable! What I don't get about it though is why is there dragopnflies on a lot of her stuff? Her story never even mentions dragonflies, why not butterflies?Okay,I should stop rambling abd get to the outfit. The outfit is a polo dress or a rugby dress whatever way you put it.I love to roll the skirt part up under the shirt part and put some jeans on too,so the rugby dress can be made into a shirt. The underwear is so cute! I love the dragonfly on it, i also like the shade of blue it is. Her shoes are the cutest shoes! They have a little yellow bow on them, which makes them even MORE adorable.Overall I give Lanie an A +++

Hair: Crazy when you take it out of box! I brushed it out and recurled it, and it looks much better now though. A- Shoes: So cute! A+ Dress: Short, but with white pants/leggings it looks fine, easy to get on/off. Headband: Total pain to get on and off! There's only a little elastic on the bottom of the headband, and it doesn't really help. C- Overall Doll: Adorable! I'm so happy I got her! Her hair/eye combo is beautiful, and very fitting, and the side bangs are really uncommon.

I received my Lanie (who has been recharacterized and named Melanie) on Christmas day, 2010. I was very pleased with her from the moment I saw her in her box. I have wanted this girl since the day of her release, and I was far from disappointed. Better pictures will be added later; I haven't had much time to take any. Her wig: This is what made me want her. Her wig is very thick and volumous; her curls are extremely defined. Admittedly, I rarely touch her hair because I'm afraid I'll loosen the curl- though I doubt I will. As I said before, they are very defined. The side bangs are much nicer and much more realistic in person. Grade: A+Her meet outfit: I personally don't like it, but that won't affect my review. The dress is made of a thick cotton. That's really all I have to say; the quality is great. It fits nicely, etc. The headband is felt-like and rather chintzy. The shoes are my favorite part of the outfit; they're cute, well-made, sturdy. Grade: A (because of the headband)Obligatory "I can't believe she's not #21" photo: They look different enough for me to own both, but similar enough to be twins if that's what you wanted them to be.
