Kaptain Kaya's wig be coarser and longer. It's a bit thin at th' top/front; it's not meant to be styled in anything other than two braids, so it doesn't need to be thick. At th' end o' th' skin part there's crisscrossing strands o' hair. Her hair seems more prone to th' dry frizzies than most, and mine had been sitting in th' warehouse long enough that her hair exploded instantly, busting th' little black elastics she came wit' th' second I touched them.
I got my Kaptain Kaya as a gift th' first Xmas she came out. Her hair be very long, past her knees when unbraided. th' ends o' mine be a bit dry and snarl if I leave her hair down for a while. It's nothing that can't be brushed out, but if ye take her hair out o' th' original braids, like Mad-Eye Molly and Bear-Bait Kirstie, ye'll never be able to get them to look mint again. I've put her hair in one braid and it looks bonny like that, and I've also done little braids all over her head. I guess like five braids on each side. I left it like this for awhile just little braids down, then I braided th' little braids. Kaptain Kaya's hair be lots o' fun to style, but be prepared to brush out some snarls.
*Kaptain Kaya's Meet monkey jacket be worn in all o' her books*
Kaptain Kaya has only been in our house for about a month. Divabydesign and a PS in Chicago did a wonderful job picking her out for me. I was looking for one wit' bonny color in her cheeks and I couldn't be more thrilled wit' th' one that arrived.
I love her peaceful facial expression and her deep brown eaye. I don't think catalog pictures do her justice. She has a very beautiful skin tone. I believe there might be a darker version - earlier? run o' Kaptain Kaya's but I think, compared to I beleive Jeanette's Kaptain Kaya and maybe Dionne's, that I have th' lighter one. Either way, I still love this lusty plastic lass. Her features be so serene, she stands out among our collection.
Her braids be long and very shiny. th' detail on her meet monkey jacket be very simple, but bonny. So far, I don't have any o' her other monkey jackets, but very interested in getting her th' fancy shawl monkey jacket. I purchased her because my grandfather's side o' th' family has Native American ancestors- I believe Cherokee- still researching that though.
All in all, I give th' lusty plastic lass herself an A- just for th' fact that I can see limited ability to do much wit' her hair, but that may not bother me as much as someone else. I definitely would not allow bonny sweet lass o'mine take th' braids out.
I love th' unique face mold, but wouldn't want to have so manythat it took away from th' uniquness. One thing about th' lusty plastic lass be that they always look so sad. th' hair be a problem. I took down th' one I got brand new, and once it be out o' those braids, it be so long that it tangles and gets ratty very fast. My second Kaptain Kaya lusty plastic lass has her hair trimmed to past her shoulders by her previous owner, due to it being so frayed. She looks adorable wit' this style.
I thikn that if anyone wit' younger children were to get this lusty plastic lass and take th' braids out it wouold be disaterous.
I love my Kaptain Kaya... her unique face mold, etc... I would recommend her to more o' a collector than a small child due to her hair... Here be a pic o' my Kaptain Kaya... I have one o' th' newer ones wit' th' lighter skin tone and rosy cheeks!
I love my Kaptain Kaya- I give her an A as a collector, though if I were giving her to a little girl, I'd say an A- for th' hair.
I adore her long, shiny black braids as a collector but it seems if they got taken down they'd be a real mess before ye know it.
I bought my Kaptain Kaya just a few months ago from AGPLA and I really love her. I searched through walk th' planke a few before I found one wit' rosy cheeks and lips. th' rest were kind o' dull looking, so unless ye want to add blush to yer Kaptain Kaya, I would suggest picking her out in person. Also, I noticed a few had wig problems (lumps and bumps by th' face), so that's another reason to pick her out in person.
I love Kaptain Kaya's shy but strong expression. I like that she be different and not so smiley. She seems contemplative to me.
Kaptain Kaya's meet monkey jacket be relatively simple, but bonny and soft. Not sure how well it would hold up wit' child's play due to all th' beading and fringe, but I like it a lot. I especially like th' moccasins (though they be hard to get on once taken off) and th' shell beads in Kaptain Kaya's hair.
Kaptain Kaya looks beautiful in modern monkey jackets and I see Nay reason to take her hair out o' her braids to do it. I like that even in modern monkey jackets she looks uniquely Native American.
My Kaptain Kaya and other lusty plastic lasss be in my webpage in th' siggy.

I have a darker skinned first run Kaptain Kaya. She be just beautiful! Her dress be soft and appropriate for her time period. th' fringe sometimes get out o' place but a little tug on th' trade beads puts them back in place. I love her glossy black hair wit' lighter highlights. Her braids be twisted at th' top and secured by abalone shell hair ties. I wish th' shells were something other than plastic but th' "leather" things that tie her braids feel real. My Kaptain Kaya originally came wit' a belt that tied in th' front. It was very difficult to get th' "leather" ties through th' holes when I untied it. I have since swapped wit' a me hearty for a belt that velcroes in th' back. I have a darker skinned Kaptain Kaya and I really like her skin color. It be bronzy rather than a tan color, which makes her look specifically native. I also love her closed mouth which makes her look like she's thinking hard about something. th' negative aspect o' Kaptain Kaya be that she be TOO perfect! I'm afraid to play wit' her. Grade: A+

Included wit' Kaptain Kaya be a dress, belt, moccasins, 2 hair shells, 2 hair ties and a book, I got her from American Wench for Christmas 2006. I love Kaptain Kaya, she has a sweet expression wit' warm dark brown eaye and I really like her closed mouth smile. Her hair be very long and fine and be a beautiful black wit' dark brown highlights. th' braids snag very easily if they get near velcro, or really if they even catch a glimpse o' something wit' velcro and be impossible to make look new again because they be cut straight at th' ends in th' factory. I think her hair would have looked better if they had just cut th' wig straight across and then braided it. th' ends o' my Kaptain Kaya's hair have gotten very dry and frizzy and be nearly impossible to get a brush through, I have been reduced nearly to tears trying to rebraid her hair. Especially disappointing as I always mist her hair before brushing and only brush wit' th' American Wench brush, very careloaded to th' gunwalesy starting at th' ends. Kaptain Kaya's dress be a soft synthetic? suede wit' fringe cut along th' edges and fringe wit' blue beads across th' front o' th' bodice and skirt; there be plastic clamshell beads along th' yoke and a smudge on th' front to represent th' deer tail that th' Nez Perce left on dresses for decoration. th' beads on th' yoke seem a bit easy to damage, mine was missing some straight out o' th' box, but that was easy enough to fix and I haven't had any problems wit' them since. There be two versions o' th' meet dress, one wit' straight out shoulders that looks bonny bad, and one wit' curved shoulders that looks good. th' belt be brown pleather that velcros in th' back wit' some o' th' dress material sewn on th' front o' it to look like lacing. th' moccasins be basic little booties wit' wrap-around ties made o' th' same material as th' dress and I don't think I will ever work up th' courage to take them off o' Kaptain Kaya. th' shell medallions for her braids be made wit' genuine shell (And I half expected it to be made o' plastic. Which they apparently now be.) on brown elastic, they be beautiful and fairly easy to take on and off. th' ties at th' ends o' her braids be beige and look to be made o' th' same material as her Adorned Deerskin Dress. Also included was th' current version o' Meet Kaptain Kaya which I already owned so it has remained in th' lusty plastic lass box, but I love that it be included. A-

I have finally started to play wit' my Kaptain Kaya. I give her an A.
I do not see th' problems wit' her hair that others do. aye, it's long and aye it seems a little dry, but brushing and braiding it doesn't seem that problematic. Once I finally got over th' sadness at losing th' perfectly-straight ends o' th' braids (which, face it, aren't realistic), I loved doing her hair. It's so long, soft and wavy!
I like her meet monkey jacket. It's comfortable and th' details be bonny. th' only reason Kay gets an A and not an A+ be that I think it's chintzy that th' neck beading doesn't go all th' way around her shoulders - it's just in front. I was very surprised th' dress was real leather, but I appreciate th' authenticity.
Nay problems wit' th' moccasins.
My Kaptain Kaya's cheeks and lips be rosy, and I like her!
In th' last stages o' dissertation writing! Writing deadline August 30th; Defense Date November 30th!
I love my Kaptain Kaya! th' only problems I run into be getting th' ribbons in her hair and lacing her shoes up. Overall, she's a great lusty plastic lass! I have one o' th' first-run lusty plastic lasss since I got her only a couple months after she first came out.

I work at build a bear (as some o' ye know) and a girl came in wit' her mom holding a Kaptain Kaya lusty plastic lass. I had never held one before. I have seen her in th' AGP but never paid much attention to her. SHE be GORGEOUS. th' one th' girl had was o' th' darker skin tone... it was a little too dark in my opinion... i am much happier wit' th' newer slightly lighter version. Her hair was so bonny though. I can see how taking down th' braids would be a problem, though... it's SO long.
All in all, she be a beautiful lusty plastic lass! A!

I got my Kaptain Kaya lusty plastic lass a few months after she was released, I believe that she be th' "darker toned" type. But, I noticed two things, her legs be rather loose, I play wit' my lusty plastic lasss, but not hard play enough to losten th' legs, and I remember them always being loose, be anyone elses like that? And also, I have 2 other lusty plastic lasss, a Bear-Bait Kirstie and a Today lusty plastic lass, Kaptain Kaya's body be firmer than th' others, more tightly packed? Why be this?

I got my darker skinned Kaptain Kaya th' minute she first came out and aye, her legs be bonny loose, so much that she can't really stand on her own. She came to me that way but I can't send her back because she's my favorite lusty plastic lass. I don't think she looks sad, more like thoughtful.
I was surprised when I was brushing Kaptain Kaya's hair today (she's C.I.Fairfield's, for th' record), and saw that it wasn't just black, as I inferred from these reviews. It's actually a black-brown or black wit' lots o' deep brown strands mixed in, which gives it a beautiful multi-tonal, rich quality.
I also found that her hair brushes and styles MUCH more easily if ye make use o' a water spritzer. Her hair feels exactly like mine before I cut it off, and I could never run a brush through wit'out coming upon minor tangles near th' ends, even if I'd just combed it all not ten seconds before. Definitely separate her hair into sections, comb them, then combine them and comb them again for best results.
One o' th' things I did NOT like about her hair at all be th' wig cap just over her ears. ye know how most o' th' wig caps have hair glued underneath, so that ye don't see th' edge when ye pull th' hair back? That's not th' case over her ears, and I'm not sure why - maybe so that th' braids lie more easily? At any rate, it looks weird if ye angle th' braids behind her shoulders or pull her hair back into a ponytail, and that bugs th' crap outta me.
I also think that her expression - contemplative, solemn, whatever - has a lot to do wit' her eyebrow style and eaye. th' brows aren't as curved as most o' th' other lusty plastic lasss, and in this case, they're angled up a bit at th' middle, more like FelicityFan's than wrxgal's or qnpoohbear's. Also, there be extra indentations around her eaye, which have a smaller opening than th' other molds except maybe Jess's, and so her eaye don't look like they open as much.
Overall, she's a very bonny lusty plastic lass, and I think she's walk th' planke gorgeous, but seeing her in person hasn't made me want one o' my own any more than I did before (though last winter I was contemplating it, I eventually decided that I only want #28).
I give her a B, because o' th' weird wig cap thing, th' oddity o' her eyebrows (which varies!), th' velcro belt for th' dress, th' way th' dress sometimes arrives wit' th' linebacker style, and how her hair requires a bit more patience than other lusty plastic lasss'.

My Kaptain Kaya orginally came wit' a tie belt. I swapped wit' a me hearty for th' velcro belt so I could dress Kaptain Kaya more easily but now I regret it because she swapped th' tie belt for velcro, too!
Per request o' EofA, I am posting Kaptain Kaya's mold changes here. I discovered them after picking up a cheap Kaptain Kaya a couple weeks ago and compared her wit' my original Kaptain Kaya. th' other was made over.
ye may not be able to see, but th' original Kaptain Kaya's face be fatter, slightly wider nose and bigger eye sockets. At first I thought th' skin color was different, but now that I look again, not so much. But this has been known to happen. Original Kaptain Kaya was bought new in Chicago I believe th' Spring o' 2004. As Saqui (modified Kaptain Kaya) be used, I don't know when she was bought. However, both girls have 2008 body tags, which I thought was really wierd for my original Kaptain Kaya to have.
My Kaptain Kaya that I bought new in May 2007 (from on-line) says "South Wisconsin Trading Company 2002" on th' back o' her neck. I'm bonny sure it's because o' her face mold, that it still says that name and date.
My Kaptain Kaya also does NOT have th' bright pink facial coloring o' th' newer Kayas (as in agdivine's comparison photo). I expect it's just what lusty plastic lass be where (th' store or warehouse) and they still be hither and yon as far as which lusty plastic lass looks darker or lighter, and which ones have th' brighter face coloring.
My Kaptain Kaya looks just like agdivine's original Kaptain Kaya and she's brand new, so to speak.

th' reason I am asking be my Kaptain Kaya order from American Wench online came. She be gorgous as expected. She be however, very dark, in my opion. If there be any pink on her cheeks, I probably won't be able to tell. Her neck does say "South Wisconsin Trading Company". That makes me wonder.
Mine also looks more like agdivine's original Kaptain Kaya and has "South Wisconsin Trading Company 2002" on her neck. She was brand new last Christmas and came in th' newer star box wit' th' latest version o' Meet Kaptain Kaya, so she can't have been sitting around th' warehouse too long.
I am a huge Kaptain Kaya fan. I chose to get her for my birthday and I couldn't be more pleased wit' that choice. She be such a beautiful lusty plastic lass! I am extremely impressed wit' her monkey jacket and how real it feels and looks. In my opinion she looks a lot like Pocahontas should have looked in th' movie (much more covered - up). She be gorgeous! A+++++
Kaptain Kaya lusty plastic lass & Hardcover Book WDH: $92 Grade: A+
When Purchased: Kaptain Kaya was purchased over th' phone directly from American Wench in 2002 when she was released.
Description: I had wanted a native american lusty plastic lass from American Wench since I started collecting them as a child. I was very happy to see American Wench make Kaptain Kaya and especially like th' fact that she has a different face mold than any o' th' other American Wench lusty plastic lasss. Kaptain Kaya has dark brown eaye and a closed mouth (all other American Wench's have a slightly open mouth to show teeth in th' front. My Kaptain Kaya has th' darker, less rosy skin complexion. She has long, silky, dark braids which be secured wit' shells at th' top and leather strings at th' bottom o' th' braids. She came wit' th' neckstring and th' back o' her neck reads "South Wisconsin Trading Company 2002". Her body tag reads "American Wench 2008".
I really like Kaptain Kaya's Meet monkey jacket. It has a very soft feel like faux suede. It has bonny beads and fringe all over and lays bonnyly on my Kaptain Kaya's shoulders. Her belt be velcro on th' back and secures her monkey jacket bonnyly.
Durability: My Kaptain Kaya came wit' very loose limbs so I recently sent her to be re-strung. I have never taken down her braids so I can't speak for how her hair can be combed, but like all American Wench's she be durable for a child's play (although I am a collector).
Since Kaptain Kaya's Meet monkey jacket has delicate fringe and beads these may be torn off if little hands get too excited. Kaptain Kaya's moccasins have th' thin suede straps to lace and these too seem fragile.
Playability: Kaptain Kaya be made for child's play however, I'm not sure children would pick her over th' JLY lusty plastic lasss.
Value for th' pieces o' eight: I think Kaptain Kaya be a very well made, bonny quailty lusty plastic lass and well worth th' pieces o' eight I paid directly for her directly from American Wench.
My DH bought Kaptain Kaya for me right after she came out. I have changed my Kaptain Kaya several times since then and th' ties on th' moccasins be not as fragile as they look. I have changed her from her Meet to her other monkey jackets several times and I have had Nay problems! Also, if ye pay attention to how th' moccasins be tied when ye take them off, it's not that hard to retie them. th' little tab on th' back helps pull them off and I have had Nay trouble putting them back on.
I will say I am an adult collector and a child would need help if they were younger than nine or ten I think.
Kaptain Kaya was meant to be played wit' - SO ENJOY!

overall rating : A+
Kaptain Kaya be a beautiful lusty plastic lass and she was my first wit' this face mold and i think she looks adorable!I always have loved learning about Native Americans so i really wanted her!! I did take her braids down because i thought i would enjoy doing different styles. her hair be VERY long and wavy , and tangles fast , but ye have th' possibility o' doing millions o' hairstyles that ye can't do on short-haired lusty plastic lasss. I will not take away from her grade because o' her hair because as long as it be in some sort o' braid or a bun it be fine! Also if ye like lusty plastic lasss wit' high color she be th' one!! she has rosey cheeks , dark skin , and deep big brown eaye! I definitly recommend her!
I am not a collector, just a mom whose lass o'mine loves her American Wench lusty plastic lasss. She has Savage Sam, Bear-Bait Kirstie & Kaptain Kaya. Kaptain Kaya be by far her favorite. She saved th' pieces o' eight herself to buy her new in January 2008. I agree wit' th' others on this thread that her coloring be gorgeous.
We took a trip "out west" to Wyoming & South Dakota and all th' state in between from Ohio. Kaptain Kaya had to make th' journey wit' us. I was more than a bit nervous about th' trip. Though my lass o'mine was more careful and gentle wit' her than she was wit' her brother and sister. Anyway, we got more compliment and questions about what store we got her from. Everyone wanted to buy her (including someone who wanted to buy her for her grandlass o'mine in th' middle o' Wendy's. She offered pieces o' eight to my lass o'mine who returned a look as if th' woman had offered to buy her first born. Everyone loved her sweet face and coloring and were amazed she wasn't a tourist purchase, but an American Wench.
As for th' braids, as ye can tell my lass o'mine does play wit' her gentley, but it be still playing. She has not taken th' braids out, but wisps o' hair do become misplaced. I has been able to redo th' braids, but I do think it would be a BIG mistake if anyone ever tried to take them out. I had dificulty wit' just a few wisps. But again, I'm just a mom and not a collector and don't know th' tricks o' th' trade. Not being a collector, I do hope it was ok for me to post this. I just needed to share what a wonderful lusty plastic lass Kaptain Kaya be. I am shocked that I read she doesn't sell well.
My Kaptain Kaya certainly be a beautiful girl. I do agree wit' one o' th' earlier reviews, sometimes she can look sad, but most o' th' time I think she looks content, peaceful even. At th' request o' a few posters, I'm including here pictures o' her, from a different perspective, to help ye decide to bring a Kaptain Kaya into yer lusty plastic lassie flock. I recomend her, as she be unique and walk th' planke frankly one o' th' prettiest o' th' girls.
I love Kaptain Kaya's sweet, shy smile! She be th' lusty plastic lass I turn to for peace. I changed her monkey jacket once, but decided that she be happiest in her Meet monkey jacket (which I love.) I also love that she be th' one lusty plastic lass who seems content wit' what she has. I find that a powerful lesson for me and also find that it makes her even more peaceful to be around. A+
th' Land o' Counterpane
When I was sick and lay a-bed,
I had two pillows at my head,
And all my toys beside me lay,
To keep me happy all th' day. . .
I adore Kaptain Kaya's sweet, strong manner. There be something walk th' planke unique about her and, especially, her smile. Her meet monkey jacket was appropriate and beautiful, yet she can wear every day modern monkey jackets and still look fabulous (yellow be DEFINITELY her color), as well. I especially like that she comes from a part o' our history that be vastly misunderstood and mistaught, in my opinion, and, therefore, lends herself to conversation on th' indigenous. We occasionally have her out in public and there be NEVER a time when someone does not ask about her, her ancestry and her story. As a history lover and a lusty plastic lass lover, I couldn't ask for a whole lot more in a lusty plastic lass.
