New Mexican Table & Chairs Item #JF (or D5967) $75 (price increase to $90 January 2012)
"In Josefina’s time, families did not sit at a table to eat. Instead, they served food from the table and sat on chairs or benches around the room. Your wooden table and two matching chairs are carved with a cornstalk design. The table has a pull out compartment for storing valuables"
This is a great quality set of furniture for Josefina's collection. Our table and chairs are Pleasant Company. The table measures 12 inches wide by 8 inches deep and stands just over 9 inches high.
The chairs are 6 inches from floor to seat and 12 inches from floor to top of the chair-back. The chairs' width and depth are both 6 1/2 inches.
The table is a very sturdy piece of furniture that is made with traditional mortise and tenon construction instead of with nails. All the pieces are then glued to stay in their appropriate slots.
There is a sliding top in the table-top that opens to reveal that the table-top is hollow where the family could hide valuables. You could fit a lot of things inside the table-top!
The carvings along the outside edges of the table top are supposed to represent cornstalks. It looks very hand tooled and authentic. There are also some carvings down each table leg. Everything is exquisite.
The chairs have an authentically hand made look to them too. They have hammer indentations on the seat, very similarly hand carved cornstalk images on the back, and the same mortise and tenon construction.
I absolutely recommend this table and chairs set for Josefina. The price is a bit steep, but the quality is wonderful. Grade A+

Single New Mexican Chair Item# JFC $22 each
"Josefina can host even more of her family with this extra chair, carved with a cornstalk design."
We thought Josefina might like to entertain more guests, so we got her two more chairs. These new chairs are Mattel chairs and slightly different from the PC counterparts as reviewed in the first post. Still nicely made and authentic looking. They just look more 'factory made' and less 'hand made'.
I just got Josefina's chairs yesterday from AGPC and I was thrilled with the quality. Of course, now that I've seen them side by side with the PC version....I wonder if a coating of furniture wax would help the Mattel ones look "richer". Maybe I'll try that on the underside of one of them to see if it works.
When the CS person brought the chairs out, the boxes were dusty from the stock room. When I saw the quality, I thought these must be still PC but I can see now that mine are Mattel. I'm still impressed with the quality of these. I figure that if they're grouped together it just adds to the handmade look of them if they aren't a "perfect" match.

Josefina's table and chairs are the most beautiful furniture pieces American Girl makes. They look exactly like the old furniture in my family home back in New Mexico. Everything about them is so perfectly New Mexican- the color of the wood, the beautiful carving, and the wonderful structure that makes them fit together so perfectly. I love how sturdy they are, just like the adobe homes back at home. The cornstalk carving is so perfectly New Mexican, as corn forms the foundation of human life in the area.
I put off getting this set for a long time, but I was utterly thrilled to buy my set at MCM for only $15! An absolutely steal, and the best deal on anything of Josefina's that I've gotten.
I purchased this set when it was on the weekly spotlight sale for $62. This is my first AG furniture purchase. Josefina's table and chairs is very well made and very sturdy. The detail on the wood is gorgeous. I recommend this set to any collector and give it an A+.
Collectors have occasionally complained that the historical accuracy of Josefina's table and chairs set changes the play value because as described, the set is not designed for sit-down meals (i.e. "In Josefina’s time, families did not sit at a table to eat. Instead, they served food from the table and sat on chairs or benches around the room.") However, I want to note that the chairs can certainly be used for sitting, and I've found when we've posed Josefina at table that the foot rests actually help brace the doll.
I love the set personally as it is lovely and such a unique piece. I think it is the prettiest of all of the AG table sets and a great addition to any collection.
Here's another item I've had since March of this year and have just now gotten around to reviewing here!
Josefina's table and chairs are made of real wood. As you can see in the picture, they are stained much the same warm honey color as our hardwood floors. I thought they were going to be much lighter than this and so was a bit surprised by their color, but no less pleased. They're scaled to Josefina's size, more like a child's table set than a real adult-sized one.
The furniture has a lovely "cornstalk" carving design, which looks like it could have been done with one chisel. The carving lends a simple elegant feel to the set!
Pic of the little panel that slides out to reveal that the table is hollow. I was surprised by how little you can fit in there - don't expect to store her dishes underneath! - but her silver platter and bizcochito cookie recipe slide in for safe keeping.
I don't yet have the dishes that accompany the table set - I will someday! - but for now I have it decorated with pieces from her Christmas and herb gathering sets. I'm not sure that having a chicken on the table is the best idea, though...
