I have no idea what you are getting at about the cheap wood or plastic, because I purchased my ice cream freezer July of 2007 and it is antique wood and metal, no plastic to be found anywhere. Mine also came with the recipe card, and you can make real ice cream with it.
I held of purchasing this because everyone kept saying that the new one was a piece of crap and that you could not make any real ice cream with it. When I finally got it I was surprised that it was as high quality as the supposedly retired "original" from Pleasant Company. Yours does not look at all that different from mine.
A+ for the MATTEL version. Well worth the money.
I have heard, however, from AG officially, that in the not too distant future this set will be sold without the recipe card. I do not know why they made that change since the ice cream freezer really works, but they did.

The one I got brand new from AG for Christmas a few years ago was plastic or cheap wood. The one on display at AGP is the same one I got for Christmas and returned. You probably got lucky and got one that had been sitting around the warehouse for awhile. The change was made around 2004. Here is the newer one

I just got one today (February 2008) straight from AG. It was in a new box with a new pamphlet and it is wood! Heavy and nice with real metal. No plastic whatsoever. This is one of my top five accessories. I'm so glad I finally ordered it.
It didn't come with a recipe card however. I would love a scan if anybody is willing to do that.

Here are some comparison pictures of the older wood version and the the newer version as well as the 2 different recipe cards: For scans of the recipe cards for printing, check out my AG scans album... picasaweb.google.com/slp4god/AGScans#

Since this comes up in discussion threads from time to time, I want to clarify that at no point was the ice cream freezer ever made of plastic. While the wood composition and staining have apparently changed since it first debuted (as can be seen from Tiffany's comparison photo above), and the recipe card was omitted from later versions of the ice cream maker, the piece itself has ALWAYS been made of wood. As of September 2008, AG stopped selling it separately, but as of this writing it is still available as part of Addy's Ice Cream Set.
