Review: Absolutely adorable! I was so very excited to receive this! My favorite pieces are the tiny "Rewards of Merit"... the illustrations are so lovely! My only complaint is that pulling the leather string to close the satchel can be a bit tricky at first... it might tear the leather because it doesn't pull close very easily... maybe it is because I just received this and the leather hasn't been worn yet...

Kirsten's school bag is made from a tan and brown calico print. It has a real leather strap so she can hold it. On the front is a pocket to hold her rewards of merit ruler and a smaller pocket to hold her slate pencil. Inside she can store her slate, slate wiper and school book. The bag is is nice weight and easy for Kirsten to hold. I love the pockets in the front which make storage easier and neater. The rewards of merit are printed on cardstock but look like real certificates from that time. The slate seems to be real slate and has a real wood frame. Kirsten can write on it with her slate pencil. The book cover is heavy paper and the book is stapled together which is inaccurate. Inside though is very cute and I liked reading Kirsten's school lessons. The slate wiper is just a piece of woven cloth but that is accurate. The ruler is real wood with actual measurements on it. It could be used for any of the girls from any time period.

My biggest complaint about the Mattel set is that they changed the slate pencil! Mine came with a thin, silver slate pencil with a pointed edge. It fit neatly in the little pocket on the front of the bag next to the pocket for the ruler.

The picture on AmericanGirl.com still shows the slate pencil as being with this set. I received mine today and was a bit disappointed that it was just a small piece of (broken) chalk. But I'm planning on using it up, so it really doesn't matter what Kirsten writes with.

The little Merit Reward cards say on the back that they are actual reproductions of the originals. The Child's First Reader book is simply adorable.

The "12 inch ruler" is really pretty scale size to Kirsten.

Definitely worth this month's sale price of $14.

This set is adorable! My favorite part is the reader. I just love doll sized books. I love the litle bag it comes in. My friends and I used to play with it ourselves without our dolls. It gets an A+ from me!

Here's our set - it's from 2005, and it looks slightly different from the PM versions. Which I did not know until like, 5 seconds ago.

This set includes a slate bag, slate, chalk, wiper, ruler, book and 6 rewards of merit. I don't have Kirsten, but I have her school dress and lunch so I had to get this too. The calico slate bag has a leather drawstring and pockets on the front, unfortunately on mine, the pocket for the chalk is just too small for it to fit into. The "slate" is actually wood painted black with a natural wood frame but it looks convincing, the slate wiper is a square of unbleached unfinished cotton. The ruler is lightweight (maybe balsa) wood, fits nicely in a front pocket on the slate bag and doesn't look too out of scale with a doll. The Child's First Reader is beautiful, mine has a glued spine instead of a stapled one and I prefer that. The inside is a nice reproduction of an authentic school book and like all the mini books, it is actually readable. The 6 Rewards of Merit are my favourite part of the set, I love the artwork and their importance in the story. A+
