This set was released in 1987, later revised, and retired in 2001. The paints and paint box underwent an additional modification and were rereleased in 2015 as Samantha's Painting Set. Additional comparisons of this piece can be found HERE.
Even rainy days were fun at Piney Point, if there weren't too many of them! Samantha stitched pine needles into a little tuffet as a spicy-scented memento of her vacation to take back home at the end of summer. Rainy days were perfect for painting, too. Samantha would take out her paint set with its palette, brush, and five tubes of watercolors and paint pictures just like her mother had done in her sketchbook when she was a girl at Piney Point long ago. There are blank pages for you to paint in, too.I got this set off Ebay last month and I really love it! I got the first version with the two compartments and 6 tubes of paints. I love that the paint is actually real and if you wanted to, you could paint a picture. Lydia's book is so lovely as well! The paintings inside are really quite lovely and it gives you a good peek at what Sam was like as a toddler and of course see her Mom and Dad also. ;D Mod edit to remove deleted image links

I got this off of ebay. Mine is the later version with five (larger) tubes of paint. Even after all these years, the paint was still good! (I had meant to bid on the six-tube version, bu missed it.) This is a marvelous set and well worth buying, even at inflated ebay prices. The pack basket isn't part of the set, it was just there to prop it up.

I got mine off ebay, and would give it an A overall--especially the tuffet, which smells like pine! I like the pictures in the sketchbook, but thought there'd be more of them. Oh well. At least I have it.

This is such a beautiful, detailed, and functional set. I love that the paint box and palette are real wood. I have the five-tube set, and apparently there is a variation in the paint tubes. One, which I'm sure is older, has metal tubes (it looks like the six-tube set had the same). The other has the same colors in plastic tubes. The metal tubes, while very realistic, are easily crumpled and probably easily torn. The original owner of my metal set told me that the yellow tube started leaking and had to be thrown out. Plus, another of the tubes looks a little corroded at the base. Although my inclination is to prefer anything made of metal over plastic, I think the switch to plastic in this particular case was probably wise.

A few years ago I came across duplicate PC versions of this set and thought I would share with you. These are from two different editions. The one on the right is the early PC edition with six paints and a smaller box (see second photo below). The one on the left was the later edition. The paints were reduced to five instead of six (the white paint was no longer included). The box was also reformatted on the interior and made slightly larger on the exterior. The pine tuffet pillows are identical! I could not see any noticeable difference in the size, shape, coloring or texture. The sketchbooks are very similar. The only difference I found with these is the writing on the front of the books is thinner and smaller on one than the other. I have posted this and other comparisons with photos on my website.

This set is adorable. I have the early PC set with the six tubes of paint. The palette and brush are nice as is the wooden case. the little pillow smells like pine needles. the sketchbook has sweet pictures.
