This item was released in 1986 and retired in 2008 during the first archival of Samantha's collection.
This elegant Victorian steamer trunk is covered in gray Cordura with brown, leatherlike trim, fitted with brass-plated hardware, and lined in a burgundy print. Inside are three drawers, a built-in shelf, an oval brass mirror, and three wire hangers. The trunk is big enough for you to keep Samantha in, too! H: 21", W: 11", D:10".Samantha's Trunk ST $175 Grade: B LOVE having this to store all of her items in....well, what I can shove and manage to fit in it. And I do shove quite a lot in ours. the trunk is quite sturdy and made of wood with a fabric overlay. There are leather belt and trim accents with brass hinges, lockes, and corners. Inside of the trunk has a paper finish. On the right there is space to store a doll or hang her clothes. When you store just her dresses it leaves enough room on the bottom to store taller and chunkier items. We keep Sam's parasols and croquet set there. The lefts side of the trunk has two open shelves. They are nice but seem to be a bit of a waste of space. I would far rather have had more drawers or one larger drawer. The trunk comes with a brass finished mirror. Below the shelves are three drawers covered in a paper. Each drawer has a small pull of brass. Each little drawr holds all those wonderful little pieces you worry about loosing. A girl needs a palce to keep her "unmentionables" And all of her shoes!

This is a perfect replica of a period doll trunk. My grandmother had an old steamer doll trunk and the inside was just like this one and covered in paper too. I'm not sure whether I will be inheriting that or not. It was in pretty bad shape and my grandmother can't remember what she did with it!

Grade: A Review: Actually Nellie has taken it over(shhh don't tell Samantha) The trunk actually holds alot of items, currently I've got six outfits hung up and it closes shut just fine. Granted there's no room for any furnture or Nellie herself but that wasn't my concern,I wanted a place to store her clothes. The other side of the trunk has three drawers that pull out,a good spot to store small items like shoes or dress accessories. There's a small shelf at the top that's good for the short story books or her steroscope. A leather handle at the top of the trunk makes it easy to carry and it closes with two locks(though dosen't actually lock). There's a brass name plate on the back that says 'american girl' which I assume in real life would have held the owner's name. All in all worth every penny and since it stands on end, makes a good fit for small spaces. -Sarah

I just received this trunk in the mail today. I LOVE it. It's a nice size, but I would have liked if the shelves were a little bigger. I can fit a lot of outfits on the hanger because of the ribbon that holds them in. A!

I just got the trunk! The PC version with the original brass plaque. I love it!
As a collector's peice, it's beautiful. There is plenty of room in the drawers and the shelves for Sam's small things. Under the dresses is a great place for the shoes and large items like umbrellas and croquet set.
However, the dress will not hold all of her things - period. Too many dresses, too many hats. So for storage it's not so great.
It is quite sturdy and it's so great to open it up and see all her stuff! Just like that old-fashioned trunk that 'inspired' the American Girls in the first place...

i bought my trunk a few months ago but have been unable, until now, to write a review on it. The outside of her trunk is wonderfully made. It is wooden and covered with durable grey corduroy. The brass nameplate on Samantha's lovely trunk. The interior holds a lot more of her lovely things than I was expecting it to. Overall I give this an A+ for quality, asthetics, and useability/ Photos and text copied from now defunct Imagestation album.

I had the PC one at one time and last year got the a mattel one since i had to sell the PM one and to me there is a difference in the quality of the mattel one. a little less sturdy and thinner the hinges seem more wiggly too. not as tight. but still a mice trunk mattel trunk is B- to me.

I'd give it an A- overall--holds pretty much everything from the original collection, but I wish the mirror had been mounted instead of taking up shelf space. However, I think it's one of the more practical trunks AG makes. I love the drawers--they hold so much!

A+ for the Mattel version. I got this today and it is of the same quality as Kit's and Josefina's Trunks. Very nice, very sturdy. A little awkward to carry around. It did not seem cheap at all. The pictures on the web and the ones here don't do it any justice. I always thought it was fairly small but in reality if you sit it sideways its the same size as Josefina's trunk. I'll get some pictures of it alongside my dolls for size reference as soon as I can. It is very nice, very well organized. I don't think it will hold all of Samantha's things and it won't hold as much as Josefina's and Kit's trunks, but it is very nice nonetheless. Highly recommended. *modified on 7/22/07 to add pictures hopefully these will help give others a size reference.

I got this trunk in in December 2007, so it is a Mattel version. I have never seen another version but no matter as I am very pleased with the trunk I have. The trunk itself is sturdy and well-made, and like Molly's retired trunk it is heavy to lug around. It's definitely a challenge for an 8 year old to carry! I was disappointed that the clothing rod does not slide out like the one on our retired Molly's trunk. I don't know if the rod slid out in past versions of this trunk but I was assuming they all did, and I miss that nice feature. So for not having that nice design feature, I'd give this trunk an A-. It is otherwise a fabulous storage piece, and so classy-looking. While it might not hold a large Samantha collection, it holds my complete and then some Addy collection perfectly. However, it is an expensive piece, so it might be worth your while to search for used ones on eBay (keeping in mind that it is a heavy item and appropriate shipping will have to be factored in), or to buy a knock-off version.

Just got the Pleasant Company version from a board member and I LOVE it. I fit all of her "original" clothes in there - all of the things I had for her when I was little, so everything through the travel duster. Also LOTS of accessories, shoes and socks. I was so happy that I can break down some boxes and free up some drawer space. She was taking over MY dresser. I buffed it up to get rid of tarnish and it cleaned up well. I'll try to post some photos later. Only complaint is, of course, no room for hats. Going to have to come up with a solution for that. Otherwise, fabulous trunk! A- (hat storage issue)

I just found the Pleasant Company version (looks exactly like Sail Away's trunk) of the trunk at a flea market and wow, what a fantastic piece this is. It's definitely heirloom quality. It's a heavy piece and extremely well made. It's not ideal for clothing storage but I love the drawers and the shelves. It's simply a beautiful, timeless, very high quality piece.

I have the PC version, I received it for Christmas the year after I got Samantha and I have to say I love it. It's not the funniest thing to lug around because it's heavy, I was pretty surprised at that when I moved it to another room to pack all my AG stuff into it.
From a first glance I didn't think it was going to hold a lot, but it does. It holds all my AG clothes, some shoes, ribbons and a bunch of other things. I don't really use the shelves that much except to lay her mirror down and hold the hair brush when I remember to put it back instead of on one of the dolls laps.
One of the sides on the second shelf has a gap in it but my stepdad says he can easily fix it with glue, I must remind him to do it since I popped it into place and always forget about it. Overall I give the trunk an A++, it's worth the price, it holds a lot, it's gorgeous and the make is incredible.

This trunk looks just like an old steamer trunk. My daughter has a real half steamer trunk. It has plenty of storage for dresses and drawers for accessories. it looks so very well made. I'm hoping to run across one one of these days.
