Your Samantha doll has sparkling brown eyes that twinkle as they open and close. Brush her long curly hair and tie it up with a big, beautiful bow like Victorian girls wore. Hug her soft body and move her arms, legs, and head. She can sit, stand, and hold the treasures that come in her collection. Samantha's checked taffeta dress has a fashionable pleated front and a dropped waist circled in burgundy satin. Her matching bow holds back her thick brown ringlets. She wears long black stockings and black shoes with ankle straps. Your Samantha doll comes, as shown here, with a Meet Samantha book so you can read about her elegant life the minute you start to play with her.
Samantha Dolls-PreMattel A
There are so many variations in Samantha dolls that it is hard to post a review that covers all Pre-Mattel dolls. I have two Pre-Mattel Samanthas and they are both different from each other. The first is from the time period when they first changed to the tan muslin bodies. Her vinyl is soft, but gets a shiny appearance to it after play, unlike the vinyl on the white body dolls. Her eyes are gorgeous and you can see the white around the eyes more prominently. She has light brown hair and Pleasant Company in large block letters on her neck. She also has less coloring on her face, but this could be due to her being played with. Really an adorable doll.
The second Samantha I have is from 1993. She is gorgeous and has lots of face coloring. Again, her vinyl is soft. Her hair color is slightly darker brown than the older Samantha, but is still lighter than the current Mattel Samanthas. She has Pleasant Company in small block letters on her neck. Again, a gorgeous doll.

I have two Samantha's. One is probably older (got her off eBay). I give her a B. I'll have to try a downy dunk, but I think she has her own charm with her course hair. The second is the first AG doll I ever got in 95. She is my absolute favorite. Her eye sticks a little, but she is so pretty, I couldn't bear to part with her. A+.

My Sam is PM. I got her for Christmas when I was 6 or 7 and she was my first doll so she is very special to me and now that I found out that she is PM, it makes her even more special! I have what I call "Samantha hair", wavy but not curly hair, and I look like her, but I have gray eyes, not brown, which is why Samantha is EVEN more special to me! She is so pretty, but quite chubby and has fitting problems, so I'll give her an A+, just for her beauty

I have a pre-Mattel, post-WB Samantha. Mine has the WB wig that has the bump in the middle, and her skin tone seems darker than other Sams, but that could be age. Her face paint is mostly gone, but it was a lovely rosey color in the beginning.
My Sam is rounder than the modern dolls, but her hips aren't as far apart as the WB's. (I compared her pretty closely to the WB that a friend had.)
Overall, I like my version of Sam better than the white bodies and the Mattel style, but I'm biased!

I'm going to post pics of my mom's (ljaew) Samantha, since I'm the one who takes the pictures and knows how to post them. She's pretty and I agree that there are many variations. My mom's Samantha looks upward and tends to have a day-dreaming look. She came from ebay, so I'm not sure of her actual age-I think she's 1993 or 1994 maybe?

I bought my Samantha in late 1996. She has curly hair that does get dry but that has maintained its curl in over 10 years. Her hair is easy to braid and put into a ponytail. I was able to brush her bangs in a sideswept way. I have not had problems with her eyes or body otherwise. She has stayed in great shape overall. I give her an A.

A+++++....!
I got Samantha for Christmas when I was seven years old. I fell in love with her immediately, she is so pretty! Her hair was curly and shiny and her outfit was beautiful, in fact I loved it so much that the next Christmas I got the matching outfit and matching pajamas (which I wore all the time.. though they were extremely itchy!).
Her hair has not given me much of a problem, I like it because it looks natural. I only have PM dolls so far, so I don't really know what the new doll hair is like in person, but from pictures it looks very unnatural and too shiny/barbie dollish for my taste. I think my Samantha's hair is perfect texture.

I have a PM Samantha from 1991-93. Not quite sure, I got her off Ebay. She is so pretty! I absolutely love her.
I also love her pretty, curly, light brown hair, her lovely eyes, everything about her!
She doesn't have much facial coloring, but I don't really care. I like her anyway! Her hair was a little dry but a downy dunk fixed it right up!

Samantha was my first girl. I got her when I was nine, and have loved her ever since. My Sam has the lighter brown hair, which has become very dry over the years. I played with her a lot growing up, and that shows.
I love Sam's eyes and how expressive they are. Her face almost seems smaller than my newer girls. Her vinyl is soft, and a more olive color than most of my girls.
All in all, I would give Samantha an A. She has held up well for the 16+ years I have owned her, and I love how different she is compared to the newer Samantha dolls.

I got my Samantha for Christmas in 1989 when I was 7 1/2. She was very loved and played with and it definitely shows on her. She's the lighter haired version and almost 20 years later her hair is pretty fuzzy but it still stays curled (I just picked her up from my mom's house where she was sitting on a shelf and her hair was curled, but I'm not sure exactly when the last time I curled it was). Not sure exactly how long her bangs were, because I found a note in her truck that said I had cut them in 1990, I don't think it I took off a whole lot though. Her right leg is detached but both her eyes still open and close smoothly. She was my favorite American Girl doll and I took her everywhere with me, most notably to Scotland when I lived there for a year when I was 13. Even with her broken leg, she gets an A+ from me. mod edit to remove broken image links

PM Samantha - A+ Samantha is my first and favourite American Girl. I was thirteen when I found her at a flea market for $4 in 2006. I was speechless (for the first time in my life, lol) She's from 1993 and is just so stunning. Her hair is lighter than mattel Samantha's and she has partucally no facepaint, but that's okay because she has such long, brown and beautiful eyelashes! Mine has no curl since it is very dry. I love everything about her and if you are debating on getting Samantha, I highly recommend her! Here's some photos (sorry there are some with other dolls) Samantha and Ruthie: Samantha gets an A+ from me. Isn't she lovely?

I found my PM Samantha at an Antique Mall for $15, which included her night gown, robe, slippers, and meet outfit!!! Her hair feels like brand new! She has loose legs, but that's about her only flaw. Her long lashes are stunning. I already had a Samantha, but couldn't pass her up. So she is now Samantha's long lost twin, Olivia Parkington. I give her an A+
With her twin sister Samantha. Mattel Sam is on the left, PM Olivia is on the right.

After being disappointed with both Mattel and WB Samanthas, I thought I'd try a PM version. I found one on eBay in December 2008 and fell in love with her from her auction picture. Needless to say, it was love at first sight because I knew she was "the one" from the moment I locked eyes with her. She's the Samantha I never got as a child. I'm a little unsure of her original purchase date, but since her meet outfit has West German/1986 tags, I'm thinking she might be around 1993. Maybe 1995 at the latest. Her meet outfit...is her meet outfit. I like the color (always have!), but it's about the same as my Mattel Samantha's meet outfit. It feels more like taffeta, though, and the ribbon doesn't feel as fake. Anyway, I love this girl! She gets an A+++ from me.

I got my Samantha for my sixth birthday in 1995. A++++++ She was my first and I'd wanted her for half my life by that point. (I'd gotten bitty baby at three or four). Samantha is my favorite of all my dolls, as in, I would choose not to part from her last if I did have to part from them at all. Her first clothes also said made in Germany, which I appreciate. With age her face has gotten darker, it's kind of tan now more than anything else with some lighter smudges on it. Her hair smelled like fish for years because of I was always at a friend's house that smelled like fried fish. My one complaint is that her hair is now pretty disheveled. Parts of it are somehow shorter than others?? I didn't even brush it that much. She's still really pretty, no longer smells like fried fish by the way, and I love her!

My PC Sammi, is *SO* cute!!!! I got her in 1998, and she's just a gorgeous girl! She recently went to the AG Doll Hospital where she got her legs, arms, and torso fixed up, since her legs were extremely loose and her torso was HUGE and I wanted her to fit into Mattel clothing. They do restring dolls if you beg them to! A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ for this girl!

I bought a pre-loved PM Samantha (c. 1995 by the look of her shorter though still appropriately brown lashes, like my 1995 PM Felicity) from a board member. Her hair is a bit dry and crunchy, but it has still retained its original curl, and her face-coloring is simply lovely. Unlike my other PM dolls, who tend to faceplant without the aid of doll stands, Samantha stands up on her own without any issues. And I love her decal eyes... They photograph beautifully, and I'll never have to worry about them going silver!
Though it is a pretty enough dress with its elegant pleats, I never liked Samantha's meet outfit due to the fact that it isn't flattering on her, she only wears in it on the cover of her books, and what is up with those Mary Jane shoes? Samantha consistently wears Edwardian ankle boots except at her birthday party. Grandmary would certainly disapprove.
I'll give her an A, but her Meet outfit is a B and those awful shoes are a D.
My Samantha in what I think should have been her Meet Outfit:

Well, throwing my two cents in. I have a very well-loved tan bodied PM Samantha. Her life as my best friend was not easy - but she still looks pretty good. Her face paint has faded some, but not as bad as I've seen. I looooove her - so its easy to say A+! I also agree with the above poster - the Meet Shoes are gag-me terrible. The right strap broke about a year ago- although it lasted 14 years. ETA Pictures This is an eBay waif. She was stamped PC, but I thought it was fascinating how different her face and coloring was from mine. Poor dear donated her wig and moved on to live with kayaswish. Here are a few of my Samantha. I've been told she has a "sweet" face - but of course I'm biased.

I got Sam just last year from eBay...very good price in wonderful condition. Imagine my joy upon opening her and discovering she was PM!! The eBay listing hadn't mentioned it.
I wanted Samantha ever since my best friend in childhood had shown me hers and let me borrow her for sleepovers with my first doll.
Ugh she's such a cutie pie I could post pictures of her all day! xD She gets A++ for cute factor, but since she's PM she looks goofy standing next to Nellie...she is slouchy and short in comparison! Makes them look as though there is a huge age gap between the two!

This is my little Samantha Cécile. I bought her on Ebay last December 09 as a Christmas gift for myself. I am very pleased with her. She has little face paint but gives her an innocent young look. She's kind of chubby and she has very nice hair. She is shorter than the others and cute as a button! She's my favorite historical. P.S. I did took some stuffing out of her because she was too "hard" and looked a bit like a football player LOL.

Ahh, my sweet Sam. Sam looks very much like Bananabelle's Sam, only with some face paint on her lips and a scratch on the paint of her left eyelid. I was about 13 when I received her as my big present for Christmas 1993, so she's not quite as played with as some of the Sams mentioned here. Her hair has been very dry for years. Until I came to this site, I dealt with it by keeping it in a permanent pony tail. After I read the suggestions here, I washed it and Downy-dunked it. The ends are still pretty dry, but it is otherwise better. She has loose limbs and isn't great at standing, probably due to spending most of my college years on my bed.
And yet, with all that...she's my baby. She's been one of my closest friends since I was 13. She's always been there to hug and kiss.
And I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who doesn't like her meet shoes. They're impossible to put on! I finally retired them after my mother bought strapless vinyl shoes from the Springfield Collection that I can actually get on her feet. They're in the basket in the back, but she rarely wears them now.

A++++++++++++ I LOVE my Samantha! I've had her for 22 years. She has a tan body and a more olive complexion. Her eyelashes are long, soft, and slightly curled. Her hair...it was well loved and played with. lol. I seemed to have brushed the curl right out of it and it has a grey-ish tint to it now. Her body is slightly over stuffed and she has a bit of a hunch-back. Yet, I wouldn't change her.
I am shocked, and really quite appalled, at the steals some of you found on PM Samanthas. I can't imagine letting her go. Let alone, for the crazy price of $4!! When I received Felicity in 1991, my mother tried to get me to give my Samantha to my older sister. She has brown hair and brown eyes. I refused. I told her that I couldn't give Sam away, she knows all my secrets.
I can only hope that every girl have that kind of bond with their doll as a child.

Samantha is beautiful. I don't know what year mine is from, because I found her for $1 at a garage sale. The tag on her meet dress says that it was made in Hungary for Pleasant Company. Her hair is soft and silky, but has lost a lot of its curl. She is pigeon-toed, and her legs are a little loose. She has the soft vinyl, which I prefer. I give her an A++++

I love my Sam. She was my third doll I got (Kirsten beat her by 12 hours - Christmas Eve vs Christmas Day). While her stories were not my top favorites (4 out of the 6 books I liked), I played with Sam quite a bit. She just has an adorable face/hair/eye combo.
Her hair has become a bit dry/poofy at the bottom 2-3 inches of her hair, but it is a realistic colour. Her face paint has remained intact, as I can still see a faint pink-peach colour on her cheeks and lips. I also like that her eyes are the decal eyes, so there was never as much worry about silver eye, as has happened with my poor Molly.
For her meet dress and accessories - they are alright. Her dress is time appropriate, but I do not care for the colours. The shoes are way too cheaply made, compared to Felicity's or Addy's that PC came out with.
Her accessories are adorable. My only gripe is that with the hat being a velor material, it attracts dust way too easily.
I will edit with pictures tomorrow.

Samantha was my first AG. I got her at Savers for about $6.00. She actually spent a loooonnng time in my mother's HOT garage and managed to come out of it okay so I will say that she is very durable...lol. I also really like her long brown hair and her sweet expression. It seems to me that every Sam looks slightly different. Anyway, great doll. A+

If you are a pleasant company collector, your collection isn't complete without getting Samantha. I sadly couldn't purchase her before retiring, but thanks to eBay. I snagged a sweet pm Samantha. She is truly lovely, something about her dark hair and dark eyes and pale skin , makes her so precious. I agree there is so many variations of her, that one review isn't enough. She is shorter than my other girls to and her skin is very pale, but it looks so innocent on her. I found another Samantha at a garage sale for five dollars, and she has olive skin tone and lighter brown hair. Her face isn't as sweet as my Samantha. I give my raving beauty an A+

I adore Samantha more than words can say! I've wanted her since I first discovered American Girl (in 2006) and asked my mother if I could use my savings to buy her when I was eight, but she told me no. I was devastated when Sam was retired, but now I have her as of June 9, 2012! I just discovered this morning that she is in fact a PM Sam, not Mattel, and that made me overjoyed. I am constantly irritated with Mattel over one thing or another that they do, so having a doll made by Pleasant Company is very... well, pleasant. I got her somewhat-played-with (she doesn't look much like she was played with though) on eBay for $65.00 Buy It Now, and I would have paid more for this beauty. She'd been stored in a box for a decade, (I'm assuming since 2002) so that helps. Her hair has kept their curls even with all the laying down she's done ("sleeps" next to my stuffed animals, Sage (#40), and myself on the bed every night). She's extremely low maintenance as far as hair, but that's partly because I have yet to try and tame her hair. There are several hairs sticking up, but that isn't a problem since I'm not too picky. Her eyes are gorgeous, brown, no silver-eye, opens and closes perfectly, and her eyelashes are almost brand-new condition--nothing cut, sunk in, or torn off. As with PM dolls, the eyelashes are rather soft. She also has the decal brown eyes, rather than the pinwheel (I think it gives her more character). On to her body: Soft, huggable (as AG says), and she's rather cuddly. Her fingers have no dark spots on them, unlike my two-year old JLY doll, and her nose doesn't either. Her legs may be a little loose since she sits easier than my JLY, but that doesn't matter. Her arms are still good and her head is very attached. Her vinyl is sort of soft and squishy, plus her body is cuddly (as stated above) with no body tags. I don't mean to sound biased, but I'd give Sam an A++

I have a PM white body Samantha and I love her! Her hair and eyes are both lighter than the later editions. She is very soft and pliable with long lashes. I bought her from the original owner off ebay. I wanted a WB Kirsten but am attached to the tan bodied Kirsten I have now. PM Samantha's are a must for any PC or AG collector. livingadollslife.blogspot.com/2012/10/samantha-arrived.html
