This set was released in 1987 and retired in 2007.
For the Victorians, vacations were a time to learn about the outdoors as well as to have fun there. On sunny days at Piney Point, Samantha loaded up her pack basket and took a nature hike into the Adirondack Mountains. She chased butterflies with her net and picked wildflowers like these black-eyed Susans. Back at the lodge you can help her study the butterflies with her magnifying glass and dry the flowers she picked in her wooden flower press. You can press real flowers in it, too. Here is the best one I could get. I'll be the first to admit that I am no whiz with the macro feature.

I'm so sorry if this has been done, but i scoured the board and didn't find it.
It comes with.. Basket/backpack Flowers 3 Butterflies magnifying glass flower press net
The good: such a cute set! Every doll would want to go out and catch the butterflies, which are magnetic. The basket is so cute, bit i'm afraid i'm going to hurt it!
The bad: nothing exept the flowers are kinda cheap...
Great set! quite a few bigger things for $24! A+++

I found this set at a Flea Market today. My set is the older version with the creme colored handle on the magnifying glass. It's a very cute set but can get very expensive on the secondary market. I'm not sure if it's worth paying the high secondary market prices for. I paid less than retail but I'm missing the flower press. The nicest piece in the set is the basket pack. That piece in particular really stood out to me as very well made and unique. The flowers and butterflies are nothing special but the basket pack, butterfly net, and magnifying glass are really cool.

Can anyone give me the dimensions to the magnifying glass? I've found a small one online, but need to know if it's to scale. Thanks, My white-handled version is 3 1/2" long and the lens is just over 1" across.

This is a nice set, but pretty fragile. The pack basket is woven plant fiber just like a real one and has real leather straps with real adjustable buckles. The straps are glued behind the leather strip that wraps around the top of the basket and the glue wears out over time and the straps come undone. The buckles also can become rusty over time. The butterflies are plastic with magnets so Samantha can actually catch them. They break easily but can probably be replaced by something similar found at a craft shop. The net is real net with a wooden handle and metal strip for the butterflies to rest on. The flower press is plastic and very small. The magnifying glass looks nice. Grade: B+ pack basket holding Kaya's furs

Overall I like this set. The Basket is fun to use for outdoor and nature scenes. The flowers can be used in various scenes. The magnifying glass can be used in school scenes. The only thing I don't like is that there is not much play value in it and a lot of the pieces are very fragile. Not great for younger kids to get into. But it is fine for collectors. Here is my take on comparing different versions of this set. These flowers are lovely. They both have very different feels to them. The one on the left reminds me of something you would buy at a market or in a flower shop with how close together the flowers are, the short length of the stems, and the smaller size of the flowers’ “eyes” in the center of each bloom. The one of the right has more of a wild look to it. The flowers are looser, the stems are longer and more spread out and the “eyes” of the flowers are much bigger. The magnifying glasses are both considered first editions due to both having the cream handles (the handle color later changed to black). There is a noticeable difference in the length of cord on each magnifying glass the shade of cream on the handle of the right one is of a lighter shade. These I was quite surprised in the differences. The set on the right the colors are almost translucent. the magnets on the back were also heavier in this set as well. In the other set the colors were more vibrant and the magnets very light weight. The flower presses were constructed very much the same way. The main difference is in the size of the square wood pieces used to make the top and bottom of the press. One is definitely bigger than the other. The only differences here are the length of the handle on the net may vary slightly and the netting on the top changes from a light weight fabric to a slightly heavier weight fabric. Samantha’s wicker baskets also have subtle difference. The length of the straps can vary as well as the spacing of the weaving as seen on the bottom of the basket. I have this and additional comparisons with photos on my website.

This set is simply adorable! The little pack basket is woven wicker with leather straps. The flower press is quite tiny, but sweet. The flowers are nice, wish there were more. The magnifying glass is wonderful for Samantha to observe nature. The butterflies are cute. My Samantha never catches them so I don't use the net.
