This set was released in 2006 and retired in 2007.
Samantha discovers that Piney Point isn’t the only place to enjoy nature. Help her explore her backyard in Mount Bedford in her mauve coat and matching hat. Her binoculars really magnify, so sling them over her shoulder in case she spots a yellow-bellied sapsucker or another one of the birds shown in her set of identification cards.
This set includes a cream colored, broad-brimmed had trimmed with lace and a mauve bow. The bow is actually two ribbons: a solid satin one and a gauzey one on top.
The coat is a heavy material - feels like bushed denim - in mauve trimmed with the same lace as the hat. The sleeves are full and velcro at the wrists, but the front hooks together.
Then there are the binoculars. They are real metal, glass and plastic in blcak and gold. The had a ribbon strap to go around Samantha's neck. They actually work!
Finally the bird cards - very pretty, with a short info paragraph on the backs.
If you think of this as an accessory set, the price doesn't seem so bad after all! It's very pretty in person.

Grade: B- (Harsh grader)
Before purchasing this outfit, I thought it was one of Samantha's ugliest outfits. However, since I'm a completest, I purchased the outfit and was pleasantly surprised that it looks nice on Samantha. It does not look that appealing in the box.
The coat is made out of a synthetic material. It is not lined but is the proper weight for an early fall or late spring coat. The material feels very “Mattelish,” like some Barbie clothes. The coat looks nice over the talent show dress. The hat is made out of either taffeta like material. It is very light weight and a little flimsy.
The coat does fit my pre-Mattel Samantha dolls quite nicely. The little metal hook isn’t even stressed. The arm-length and length of the coat is appropriate for its design. The details and finishing work add a lot to the coat and are appealing. The hat sits nicely on Samantha’s head and does not require much positioning.
I haven’t opened the cards or binoculars yet, but they seem nice. The cards seem equivalent to Kirsten’s cardboard Rewards of Merit. The binoculars are heavy and quite realistic.
I would recommend this outfit with some hesitations because of the quality of the material. However, the outfit is 100x’s better in real life than it is in the catalog.

I too thought this was one of Sam's more ugly outfits. Like Josefina's Herb Gathering Outfit, this isn't really much of an "outfit." Its a coat with a hat and a set of binoculars and cards. My Sam hasn't arrived yet, so I put this on Nicki and it does really look cute on. The binoculars really do work and are a nice touch. The cards aren't much and the hat, while it looks impressive, isn't that nice. I put this over the Tea Dress and it looked good with the white and pink in that outfit. Overall, B+. It could have been better, but it does look cute on.

I doubt that I could give a whole grade on this because each piece is of a different quality.
The binoculars are my favorite part; I have a second pair for Erica. They are very realistic and made with metal accents and a pleather strap. A+
The bird cards are fairly realisitc except they say American Girl on them. However, they do make a nice display and would work with her summer sets. A.
The coat: Personally, I really like it. It looks more Victorian than Edwardian to me, but I'm not too much of an expert on that count. The material is kind of weird but the trims are beautiful. I like that it can be worn in the same season as the Travel Duster so that Nellie or Erica can wear a coat along with Samantha. B+
The hat: I hate it. I loathe and despise it. It is cheap and totally innacurate in material. The material is very plasticy taffetta and the pretty ribbons and lace just make the 'fabric' look uglier. Neither Erica nor Samantha would be caught dead in it. I may sell this part of the outfit. F-
Total grade would be C with hat, B without it.

Samantha’s Bird-Watching Outfit
Samantha discovers that Piney Point isn’t the only place to enjoy nature. Help her explore her backyard in Mount Bedford in her mauve coat and matching hat. Her binoculars really magnify, so sling them over her shoulder in case she spots a yellow-bellied sapsucker or another one of the birds shown in her set of identification cards.
$28 SASO (added in 2006)
What I got inexchangee for that "I Like Your Style" outfit and book in 2006. The coat is a very nice fall/spring coat. It is made of a textured denin fabric. It does not feel like a par of jeans, but a flannel feel. The fabric has body, but it is not very thick and will not keep the doll warm on a very cold day. The color is a shade of purple called mauve, which is kind of like a pinkish shade of lavender. History nerds know that mauve was a very hip color in the early 1900s, and Empress Alexander of Russia's favorite color. It is a very nice color that American Girl needs to use more of. The lace has a pretty flower pattern. The hat is a shade of buttercup yellow. The hat is made out of classic American Girl polyester-type fabric. Not Victorian. Anyway, the hat is very pretty deck out in the same lace and ribbon as with the coat. The hat has an off fit. It seems like it is too big for Samantha but it is tight fit on her head. The goodies add to the outfit. The binoculars are basically the same that Kit has in her Hobo kit, except Samantha's are painted black with a gold trim. Samantha had hold her binoculars in an akward poise that only an American Girl can do. The cards are a Victorian-based illustrations with basic details about the bird. The cards are printed on card stock. A doll can hold the cards, but it would be nice if she had a pocket in her coat while she goes bird watching. Hey, to be honest, I'm glad that I finally have an outfit that goes for a pretty penny on Ebay. Out of the three outside outfits produced in 2006 this is the best in terms of quality and looks. The jacket looks nice with several of Samantha's outfits (my personal favorite is the Talent Show dress) and looks nice outside and in no matter the weather. AEdited to fix some of the funky misspellings.

I didn't purchase the rest of the set, but the binoculars are super well made and even magnify. They work for nearly any doll.
