Samantha's Tea Tin Lunchbox was released in 1986 and later modified, before retiring in 2008.
Mrs. Hawkins, the cook, packed Samantha's lunch in a brass pail that was originally filled with tea. Her lunch is light and ladylike - half a watercress sandwich, a deviled egg, a perfect peach, and a gingerbread cookie. Tuck the embroidered cloth napkin in with her food, then put the lid on.Someone asked a long time ago about the changes in Samantha’s lunch. I didn’t realize until today that I had two different versions. The version on the left (and the top peach) was purchased in 1987 or 1988. The ones on the right were purchased in 1998. Samantha must have told the cook somewhere along the line that her lunch wasn’t satisfying because all of the newer pieces are a little larger, especially the cookie. The main difference between the two lunches, is Samantha’s sandwich. The old sandwich is made of the hard-clay material like the other food. The newer sandwich is made of a rubbery material. The lettuce has also gotten paler with time. The peaches are essentially the same. The new one is a little bigger and more colorful. As for the eggs, the old egg is quite small and the white is a little bit translucent. The new egg is larger, more opaque and has more paprika. And now for the best part: the cookie. The old cookie looks a little skimpy when compared with the newer cookie. The napkins and lunch tins are exactly the same and I cannot differentiate one from the other (except for the tag on the napkin). I love Samantha's lunch and would give it a A-, as I wish that it had a vegetable or a little more food. ETA: *Samantha's Tea Tin Lunchbox only comes with 1/2 a Sandwich*

I have the new one- bought in late 2006. I am very satisfied with everything in eat. The food looks delicious. The metal is good quality and has not rusted or lost its shine. A+.

My sister has this set from 2001. It is good quality, although the food does look a little fake (mostly the peach). The tin looks okay if you wipe it off every so often. I give it an A-, because it is a good play item, but the food could easily get lost and I wish it had one more piece of food.

I just bought mine secondhand. The listing stated it was PC, and I do indeed think it is (or is possibly a mix of the two) based on the pictures already posted. The cookie is smaller and the sandwich is definitely made of clay, but the egg has noticeable paprika on it.
The tin could use some polishing, but at least it is not rusted over (still has some shine to it).
The napkin is a napkin. Not much to say there.
This is my first lunch/food accessory set (hoping to get one more), so for now, I am happy to at least have some food for my dolls to play with/pose for pictures with. Plus, I love tea, so to be carrying around lunch in a tea tin seems quite appropriate.
Grade: A-

I have the second version with the full sandwich, 2 peach halves, and gingerbread cookie. It's a very cute set, though I do wish I had the deviled egg. The one thing that I noticed is the peach halves look out of proportion to the other pieces. Mine look huge, and are bigger than the sandwich. Also, they seem a bit tight in the tea tin, but it does fit.

I own a PC set, but I've recently acquired a partial Mattel set and decided to take some comparison pics. For most of these, the PC item will be on the left and the Mattel one on the right. First up is the tea tin itself. My camera has a mind of its on when it comes to the flash, so it's a little hard to tell the differences in color. My PC tea tin is heavily tarnished, so I can't comment on color differences, but the Mattel tea tin is a nice and bright gold color. They're both the same size, but with a few slight differences. The differences are most apparent in the handles. The PC tea tin has a raised handle and the Mattel one has a smooth handle. The rim of the Mattel tea tin is smoothed over while the PC tea tin is not. The little bolts in the PC tea tin are larger than the Mattel one. The PC tea tin has a sticker on the inside and one on the bottom saying "Made in China especially for Pleasant Company". The Mattel one just has a stamp saying "Made in China". The lids are virtually the same, but I found that the Mattel lid is a little harder to pull off than the PC one. To be perfectly honest, I don't remember which one is the PC napkin and which one is the Mattel one. They're almost identical, except one is a teeny bit larger than the other. The smaller one also has brighter embroidery. Neither one is tagged and they both feel exactly the same. Close up of the embroidery. The one on the right has brighter colors and a smoother look to it. The Mattel set I received only had the peach and sandwich, so I won't be able to show comparison pics between the gingerbread and egg. The PC set only had a half, but the Mattel one comes with a whole sandwich. The bread is patterned and the watercress on the PC sandwich is lighter than the Mattel one. Closeup of the sandwiches with the PC one on top and the Mattel one on the bottom. They both feel hard and a teeny bit rubbery. The Mattel peach is ridiculously huge. It feels a bit more rubbery than the PM peach and can be opened into two halves, which makes a nice display and is probably easier for Samantha to eat. Comparison shot between the peaches and a doll's hand. The Mattel peach is larger than a quarter and a little tricky for the doll to hold, but then again, so's the PC peach. Overall, I think this is a cute set and either version is great, but I prefer the Mattel tea tin and the PC food. The Mattel tea tin just looks a bit more finished to me, but the PC food is cute and doesn't come with a monster-sized peach.

Below is pictured two pleasant company versions of Samantha's Lunch.
The one on the left was released in 1994. It is made of a hard clay-like material. rather heavy. The set on the right was released in 1996-7 and all pieces are made of rubber. I prefer the feel of the 1994 set, but the coloring of the 1996-1997 set.

I purchased my set in Fall 2004. The tin has definitely tarnished, being in storage for 10 years. I usually store the food wrapped in the napkin in the tin. I love the deviled egg. That is my favourite part- I love eggs!

I apologize for the poor photo quality. I took this several years ago before I sold the duplicate set. I enjoy this set, and am considering getting a few more of the hard resin edition for a full sandwich and several eggs and cookies. The early edition on the left were made of a heavy resin. You can tell the difference between the two due to the weight and the detail that went into creating the earlier pieces. The pieces on the right were made of a light weight rubbery type material. I do think the coloring on the peach in the later set is more accurate than the earlier PC one. I have posted this and other comparisons with photos on my website.

The tea tin is nice. It's real metal. The drawback is that it tarnishes easily. The napkin is a lovely little embroidered cloth piece, a miniature version of a real embroidered napkin. The bad part is the AG food. It's rubbery and feels weird. The food does not look all that realistic. Grade: B (AG version) Samantha's sandwich and egg vs. Etsy sandwich and egg

A friend has this set and I think it's very cute. It looks just like a lunch a proper Edwardian girl would have. The tin is brass and tarnishes which a drawback.
