This item was introduced in 2005 and was retired in December 2013 with the archival of Molly's collection.
For Molly, the beach was a place for fun in the sun! Her ruffly swimsuit and canvas espadrille shoes look just right with sunglasses and a seashell necklace. Spread out her beach towel, blow up her beach ball, and get ready to have some fun! Includes American Girl trading cards.
AKA the really cute modern sundress!
The Good: Comes with a lot, the suit, shoes, sunglasses, necklace, towel, and beach ball. Everything (minus the necklace) is really, really cute. Makes a GREAT modern Sundress.
The Bad: I really dislike the necklace, it seems un-naturally large, and not very realistic looking. But, that's a very small nitpick, everything else is great.

Molly’s 1944 Swimsuit Item# F1762 $24 (price increase from $32 to $34 January, 2012)
This is my favorite of Molly's things! The swimsuit can double as a sundress for her or any of the other girls. I don't notice a line around her middle where the bottom is sewn to the inside of the top piece. And yes, it might be a little low in the neckline for a girl Molly's age. I'm especially fond of the necklace! It's so cute and I love the magnetic closure on the back makes it so easy to put on. Maybe the shells look a bit large, but then, maybe Molly collected large shells and made it herself! I think it completes the outfit very well. The shoes are just adorable. They fit her feet just perfectly and stay on! This is one of the outfits that my girls get to wear when we go places in the car, because I'm not afraid of her shoes falling off. I think the sunglasses are cute and very well made. The towel and beach ball are very good assets for more playablility. Actually this is one of my favorite all around outfits. Grade A Molly looking good in her swimsuit

And yes, it might be a little low in the neckline for a girl Molly's age. I'm a little bewildered by this comment. This is very similar to bathing suits that I wore as a little girl (in the late 40s). Additionally, little girls often went completely topless until they were about 6! Since there was much less emphasis on children's bodies being a subject of unnatural interest, there was much less concern about keeping all covered up. Remember the Coppertone ads, with the little girl's bathing suit bottom being pulled down by the dog? I think this suit is very cute and very representative of the era.

This set is supercute! I got it because I have a soft spot for the 1940s (my research era). I don't have Molly, but this swimsuit looks fabulous on Marisol:

I love this outfit and I'm so glad I got it before it retired. The accessories are especially adorable! The towel is soft and thick, though I wish it was a bit longer. The shoes are awesome; they never fall off, a problem I've had with AG sandals in the past. The beach ball is realistically sized and I like how it matches the towel. The necklace is made of strong cord and, though I'm not sure why, it no longer closes with a magnetic clasp. It has a hook and spring-loaded piece that encloses it. The sunglasses have very dark lenses and fit Molly's face well. The suit itself it wonderful; it fits well ( Molly is a bit chubby, so I was worried) and is very flattering. Overall, this is an adorable and unique outfit and I give it an A+! Comparing size of towel to size of Molly: Picture of the clasp on necklace; it is the same as the one on the necklace with Emily's Chrsitmas outfit, which was purchased last year.

What does the...ahem...under part look like? I'm assuming it has briefs attached and isn't just open underneath like a dress...?

What does the...ahem...under part look like? I'm assuming it has briefs attached and isn't just open underneath like a dress...? Molly is wearing her swimsuit right now so this one is easy! Yes, the briefs are attached to the top with white material. The back of the top/skirt however is attached by the seem all the way down the back of the outfit so you can't completely lift up her skirt. This was the best I could do:

When this outfit came out, I wasn't too sure of it. However, I'm glad I actually got it because it really is a wonderful outfit. The swimsuit is made of a nice, thick material and fits my PM Molly nicely. I love the pretty peach color of the suit, too, which is a nice change from the usual patriotic theme of Molly's wardrobe. The little extras (shoes, shell necklace, sunglasses, towel, beach ball) are a nice touch, making this set well worth the money (IMO...). My only gripe is that the shoes stain if left on too long! My Molly looked so cute in this that I didn't want to change her for the longest time, and when I finally did, I saw faint peach-colored marks on the soles of her feet. It took several rounds of Oxy10 to fade the marks, so I don't think I'll be using these shoes anymore - unless I pair them with socks. Grade: A (no + because of the shoes staining)

I have this outfit and love almost everything about it. The color is great on Molly, the shoes don't fall off like many of the AG sandals do, and the towel is a cute, contrasting addition to the set. My only complaint is actually a pretty mild one and not related to the quality of the outfit at all...I got the idea from Molly's books that she is "blind as a bat" without her glasses. So what's with the sunglasses? Are we supposed to assume they are prescription sunglasses lol? But other than that, great set...I give it an A.

I love, LOVE, *LOVE* Molly's swimsuit!!! It is too cute! I do agree that the necklace does seem a bit big. But it was probably made that way to meet toy safety standards. This outfit will get a lot of use this summer. A+++ swimming 5 by Elizabeth, on Flickr SailorMolly

This was not an outfit I had originally intended to purchase as I just wasn't too sure about whether or not I would like it. The Catalog photos just didn't do anything for me and with the cost a bit higher than other outfits I nearly skipped this one. However, after deciding I wanted it to complete my Molly collection, I'm very glad I bought it! Molly looks downright adorable in this outfit: I actually really like the necklace. It's easy to get on and won't slip off due to the clasp and while the shells are a bit large perhaps, I think it's a fabulous piece. My only complaint has turned out to be the shoes. Whether or not the set I got just happens to have a tighter toe piece, I'm not sure. My older Molly can't seem to get her foot inside no matter how hard I try. If I DO get her foot in, her heel sticks off the shoe base and stretches out the back fabric. The shoes, while still tight, do fit my newer dolls better. I managed to get the front of her foot into the sandal for the photo but the back of the shoe just wouldn't go on!

While I love the fabric and all the accessories (definitely a bargain) and would recommend the outfit, I was a little disappointed in the following: 1. My PM German Molly could not wear the shoes at all so while this outfit is supposed to be part of her collection, she can't wear it completely....does look great on Gwen however. 2. Scrimpy towel. I have two towels from earlier times which are longer and wider so the dolls can actually lay on them and not have their legs hang off the edge. The fabric is nice...just wish there was more of it. 3. Bathing suit is a little long and looks more like a sun dress. I temporarily shortened the bathing suit and it look more realistic and actually like a bathing suit. So I think Gwen is going to be wearing it as a dress this summer.

I love this! It's a great set that actually includes pieces, and NOT just the dress and shoes. Great value and playability. It looks adorable and fits very well.

And yes, it might be a little low in the neckline for a girl Molly's age. I'm a little bewildered by this comment. ... I think this suit is very cute and very representative of the era. We just got the swimsuit and really like it. I have the same problem that jeanied had, I think. The straps on our suit are too long. So, it hangs lower than it ought. As it came, it wouldn't quite cover what needs to be covered. (The recent thread on doll modesty/anatomy springs to mind.) After taking up the straps a little, it's a great fit! I'm *not* a fan of peach, but this suit is really cute. I just need to make Molly a longer towel...

I was delighted to find the entire set, including the original thick towel, beach ball, and cards, for a good price on eBay. What a gorgeous bathing suit! It doesn't seem too immodest to me at all. It's a well-made, soft piece that looks both contemporary and right for the mid-40s.
As I mentioned, I have an earlier version with a thicker, longer towel that Molly can actually sit on. Heck, I wish I could find a beach towel for me that was as nice as Molly's. The ball is too cute - you can really blow it up and toss it around. Yes, the necklace is a bit too big, but that's probably for safety reasons.
If you have Molly or a doll like Kanani who might look pretty in peach and needs a bathing suit, this one is worth the relatively high price tag because of the quality and all the pieces.

I bought this recently after Molly's archival notice because I was eyeing the outfit as sundress for Marisol, and I didn't want to be hunting it down on Ebay. To me, it was no bargain because though it has a lot of things that come with it, I had no interest in the towel or the beach ball.
I was pleasantly surprised with it, despite what I felt was a high price. Yes, the neck, shoulder and back does expose more than what is attractive on these AG dolls, the necklace does provide enough distraction. Throw the towel over the shoulder, and it looks mighty good as a sundress. I don't think my niece's Kanani is going to want to give this outfit up. She really looks good in it.
I think the peach color looks particularly nice on the medium complexioned dolls.
