This doll is amazing. She is so cute! Sadly she's the only asian doll in production now, but she does her job in carrying that heavy burden. Honestly, Ladies and Gents I have 5 of these sitting in my room right now, 3 girls and 2 that I am rewigging for boys - all Mattel. I plan on getting me at least 2 PM's as well
I loves this doll.......
Major A+

My #4, Charlotte, was sent to me by mistake. I ordered from the catalog & they sent me the wrong doll. However, when I saw her, I thought she was adorable, & had to keep her.

This doll is sooooo much better looking in person than in any AG photo. I hadn't considered her initially, because the AG photos of her are not very appealing. But then I saw her in person at the AGBB Atlanta, and I was smitten! My Marina is absolutely adorable and chock-full of personality. Her face is delicate and has a unique face mold, used only for #4. Her hair is thick, shiny, has great swing to it, easy to maintain, and you can't see the wig cap through it when you put it in pony tails or other styles. I've dressed her in JLY and historical outfits, and she looks cute in everything. She's particularly gorgeous in black, white and red. What a beauty! I give #4 Asian a wholehearted A+

I absolutely love my #4 now known as Kyoko. She is my first JLY. I chose her because she was so different from all the other JLY's. She looks great in everything and has the sweetest look about her. I just love having her around. If I didn't like a couple of other dolls I would make myself a set of twin or triplets made of #4s.

I have a retired #4 and she is awesome. The only difference between the retired one and the current one is the wig. I've not handled the current wig but I do like the look of the new bangs better than the pie shaped bangs. Overall, I prefer the older wig because I'm not crazy about the layers in the new one though I do like the clipped hairs in the back that hide the wig cap when the hair is in pigtails. My #4 has the softest, thickest hair of all my dolls. Her wig is truly amazing.

I have eight #4s (including the 2002-2003 pale greenish skin). But really, you can't go wrong with any #4, IMHO. Even the pale greenish skin cast could be interpreted as a very pale, Japanese court type of complexion. Fujiko - slightly green but my newest "old" girl on your left and Kasumi on your right. Kasumi - the ultimate #4 (closeup next to Keiko, my first #4 from 1995, only with Mattel eyes because she got silver eye) This is a closeup of Keiko before she had silver eye, and Tsuki performing a Vulcan mind meld to move Keiko's memories into Cailin's mind temporarily until Keiko returned from the AG Hospital. Tsuki is half Vulcan, half Japanese. For reference, if you see a #4 on ebay wearing the Go Anywhere lavendar meet outfit and the description says that this is the doll's original outfit, chances are she might have a grayish olive complexion. There was a whole generation of dolls made when Lindsay was first released in 2002 who tend to have that problem. The undressed 2002 doll will have the Mattel body tag stitched into the side but the facial coloring will be pale. Pre-Mattel AGT dolls most often do not have a body tag. Also, the dolls made after Marisol have a longer neck than any who came before. For an Asian doll, this gives an elegant line when wearing kimonos. Facial coloring in dolls produced in 1997 and the mid 2000's (2005 - 2007 or 2008) is also prettier than the pale, pre-Mattel faces. *mod edit to remove customized doll images for review purposes* [/sub]

There's a big difference in the facemolds of the PM and Mattel #4's--though my signature picture doesn't do Shan Li (my PM girl) justice, for I've re-colored her face since this picture was taken--but it does serve as a decent comparison picture. That's Mei Ling in the lavender party dress (Mattel) and Shan Li (PM) in the warm-up suit.

You can see how much taller the Mattel is (Mei Ling) and the coloring is better. Plus the JLYs made after Marisol's year have smaller heads, longer torso, more slender arms and legs and smaller feet.

I have an older one that I bought around 2002-2003, but I didn't know these were very 'special'. Mine has grey-ish green skin... I have debated sending her in for a newer head. I just have to say that I love her thick hair. It's softer than my #3 who I had longer than #4. Suki is, now that I think about it, quite special. I say look for an early #4, but that's just my opinion .

The wigs of the girls with the pie bangs were much thicker and nicer in my opinion. I had a beautiful Mattel #4 with pie bangs. She had the most beautiful coloring, but I just never bonded with her. She now lives with someone who really loves her.

I just wanted to add that we went to AGPNY in the spring of 2005 and my daughter was interested in looking at #4.
All of the ones we saw in the store that year were grayish. This was with the red silky jacket and jeans meet outfit.

I've had Inky for several years now, and I'm only just seeing to make a proper review for her. Inky has a very thick wig, but unfortunately, the retired version of #4 does not have the short hairs covering her wig cap. For this reason, I try to avoid taking photos of the back of her when in pigtail styles. I've heard that the new style of wig has the short hairs, but I'm so bonded to Inky that I would feel bad replacing her head.
Another hair problem is her gigantic bangs. I think they look ridiculous, but because I'm so attached to Inky, I'm loathe to rewig. Pieces of her bangs often get pulled back when I am doing her hair, and I have to pick them out as I go. It's kind of a pain, but not having the newer version, I'm not sure that the new wig style does much about this. I would consider a bangless wig, but she has the older style of line eyebrows that are not particularly attractive.
Most of my dolls have dark eyes- and I could be wrong about this- but, I think #4 has particularly dark eyes compared to the other brown eyes available. I will try to back this up with photographic evidence.

I had a Mattel #4 and didn't love that face mold quite as much as I do the retired #4, which I have now. The Retired #4 is so sweet, innocent and very lovable. She's a lot softer looking that the newer #4s.

I love my #4 so much! I named her Sabrina and I looked just like her when I was younger. That was when I had bangs. I grew them out now, but I just love her. She has the sweetest looking-face. I got her in the "In Like Your Style" Outfit in 2007, so I don't know if I have the old or new version, but I think it's the older one because she has the bangs of an older #4. She looks great in everything and has beautiful thick hair. It has gotten a little frizzy over the years at the bottom, but has held up great.

My sweet Sadie Elizabeth. I got Sadie in January '06, after 8 years of waiting for my doll. I was going to get Molly or #14 but instead Sadie appealed to me. When Sadie arrived a few days later from the company, one look attached me for life. I can't imagine not having Sadie in my life. Her favorite doll is Molly but she has Addy (Molly now belongs to Athena). Also, I am in love with the pie wedge bang. I wish I can have it. Thin bangs don't appeal to me much.

My #4 came with the Real Me meet outfit and pie bangs. I got her right after she was discontined (June-11). The PS at the MOA called around and found me one at the Dallas store. DD thinks that is funny since I came from Texas also. Her hair is very soft and thick. It is not as stiff as Ivy's hair, it feels similar to Mia's hair. Meet Blossom and her new BFFs Pie Bangs Pleasant Company stamp Wig cap shows when her hair is in ponytails This doll is super cute in person. It is sad that this mold was discontinued.

I have a #4 from when the Girl of Today line first came out. Her hair is still in great condition, despite keeping in down most of the time. I never bought a lot of outfits for her, but now I am scouring for outfits, since she does deserve them.

My Mattel #4, Lucy, is one of the sweetest dolls I have. She's got a lot of personality... and she's just downright adorable. I love her black hair and dark eyes. Her hair is actually darker and longer than my transitional #11 but slightly shorter and much slicker than my PM #12. Her coloring is so wonderful because she wear anything. Definite A. I only wish I had bought her sooner.
