Kaya's unique face mold makes her very special. (I wish AG would use the mold again, perhaps for a My American Girl doll with very different coloring.) I really enjoyed Kaya's stories and I think she is a wonderful way to help kids learn about Native American culture.
My Kaya was purchased the day she was available from American Girl in 2002. She is one of the slightly darker skin dolls with the meet dress with the straight shoulders and tie belt. I don't have any problem with either of these -- I think the dress looks fine and the belt is not that difficult to tie (but I'm an adult).
Overall, I wouldn't recommend Kaya for a young girl because of her hair. She's less likely to appeal to the smaller girls because she's not girly or frilly by modern standards but she is one of my personal favorites. I love her serene expression and her place in history.
Grade: A

I love this set. The mess kit is really an excellent copy of the Girl Scout one I had as a kid. Here is a comparison picture: I give this set an A+!

$18 Athletic shoes, mismatched socks, ruffled, corduroy shoulder bag
Love the mismatched socks since my girls are very into Little Miss Matched. (Wish they were crazier, though.) The shoulder bag is adorable too.

$18, PJs (tank top, pants) $18, accessories (headband, slippers, mini-coconut)
The PJs themselves are pretty basic and the pieces are way overpriced ($36 total!) but how could I pass up a mini Coconut?!
B- because of the price.

Version IThis set makes much more sense to me since it has paper bags and they were even collecting bottle caps in the stories for the war effort. (But then they say the metal lunch box was a hand-me-down from Jill.) I love how everything is realistic, just miniaturized. This set gets an A! Version III also have an early version of the lunchbox with the unclumped food.

I've got a really old set (1990) with the extra, colored pencil and a new set. The old set is pictured below. I was happy to see that the set hadn't changed a lot over the years. I think this has great play value! The items really are like miniature versions of the real thing which is what I love best about AG. I would give this set a solid A!

The syrup container is the best! It looks really real. I wish the frame was natural wood and not bright pink though. TOO MUCH PINK!!

I love the bluish backpack! LOL!! I found a suitcase/backpack set with an extra backpack inside at a kids' resale shop last year. DD#2 and I each used a backpack to take a doll to AGPlaceNY a few weeks ago. There was plenty of room in the main compartment for a day-trip's worth of stuff. It's definitely a "take a doll to Grandma's" kind of backpack, not a school one, but it is sturdy and I love the pearly finish on it. Stylish, pretty and functional.
