The top tree part is a squishy foam kind of material and fits snugly into the base.

OMG THEY FINALLY MADE ONE OF THESE SEPARATE!! And I LOVE the color!! This was a no-brainer purchase for me. I have been eyeing the earring tree sold with the storage tower for forever, but I didn't want to buy the tower just for the earring tree..
