The table top is NOT plastic. Not by any stretch. My set came with a sticker that said the following:
California 93120 complaint for formaldehyde American Girl
I did some research - CARB (emissions board here in California) wanted to regulate the amount of formaldehyde in the environment, and created two phases for cutting formaldehyde. The law applies to wood and wood composite products, not plastic products.
The tabletop is a wood composite product; in order to be sold in California it had to have the sticker my set came with.
The sign is plastic, the table base is metal, the chair is metal, and most of the pieces are paper and plastic. But the table top is wood composite and the paint used to make it look the way it does had to be compliant with California 93120 to be sold in the state of California.
