Yes, that did actually happen. I filled out that card when I was a kid, sent it, and did in fact receive a pair of black suede flats, which my original GT13 still has to this day.

I also have the original shoes which, as long as you don't leave them on or near warm surfaces, are fine. The problem was that the plastic had a bad tendency to melt, which could leave stains. That happened with a few of the early items, including one of Kirsten's fish, which distressingly melted itself onto a doll-sized clothes hanger. Fortunately, the shoes were kept cool enough that they've remained in one piece.
