Samantha's velvet dress is made from heavy velvet and closes in back with a long strip of Velcro. It fits white bodied Samantha just fine. The color is beautiful- a purple blue more than blue blue as catalog photos showed. It is meant to pair with Samantha's holiday coat but would also go well with Rebecca's newest coat. It's a similar shade of blueish/purple.
The style is not very accurate for a child at that time. Children's dresses were made from cottons, twilled wools and corded silks. I've never seen a dressmaking pattern suggest velvet. Still, I wish I could have gotten my hands on it! It looks pretty on Samantha and would also look pretty on Ruthie.
