I purchased this set right around the time they switched from paper to plastic lanterns. I don't mind the plastic lanterns at all. They are a little bulky to store, but I think they've held up better than paper ones would have.
In the picture below I have tiny clear Command Hooks on the "ceiling" to hold up the strand.
