Mattel version
Only from American Girl will you be able to purchase a hula outfit for your doll that comes with a red turtleneck. Gotta love how quirky and yet how story-accurate this set is!

You get a lot of fun pieces with this outfit:

The red turtleneck is probably one of the most versatile pieces ever made by AG. It can go with Molly's cords, khakis, blue Meet skirt, and any number of modern doll outfits. (It might even go with her new plaid skirt, but someone else will have to try that and see if the red tones clash.) It is a nice red stretchy cotton. But not too stretchy; it keeps its shape. And you do need to slip it over Molly's head, but that's not caused any difficulty for us. A for the sweater.

The lei and bracelet are just adorable and totally rate an A. The yellow flowers are cheerful and durable. There are two loose flowers with the faux-velcro backing that AG is fond of sticking on its doll hair decorations. These seem to stick to doll hair better than most, so I can't complain.
Now the plastic grass skirt is probably not as durable, but my daughter is careful with her toys and we've yet to lose a grass strand. It is certainly sturdier than the older paper version (which wins for story-accuracy but loses big time for playability and durability). I would not give this outfit to a young or careless child, unless you can tolerate plastic grass shred. Also, keep it away from Easter basket grass-chewing cats. The skirt gets a B+ from me. I don't know how else they could have improved upon it though, really. FYI that the skirt is thin enough to need something beneath it beside Molly's undies-clad bum, so she wears her blue Meet skirt under it at our house.

My daughter insists that Molly would not be able to go without her glasses for trick-or-treating, so we carefully slip the mask down over the glasses and hope for the best. So far, it has served us well, but it is just a plastic mask with some elastic and won't last forever. B Over the glasses, the mask always looks askew, but that's how it is.

If you like to collect for canon-Molly, I think this outfit is a must have. It's so much fun, and worth the $22 price tag.
