I have two pairs of these boots - an older PM pair, that does not have grommets, and a newer Mattel pair, that does.
I prefer the older pair, because they are more historically accurate, and the red is slightly more subdued. However, for a young child I'd definitely want them to be using the grommet-ed pair. :-) I think it would be just too easy to tug the laces too tight on the older pair and rip through.
