A- (for thin material)
I’ve always liked the simplicity and cheeriness of Molly’s Pinafore Dress. Plus, I like how Ms. McIntire made the matching dresses for Molly and Emily as part of their birthday surprise.
I‘ve received/purchased three Molly pinafore dresses over the years. I received the first with my Molly in summer of 1989 (tagged 1986, though the dress wasn’t released until 1987), the second in the summer of 1996 (tagged Pleasant Company), and the third was purchased in the summer of 2006 (tagged American Girl). While the original PC one differs a bit from the later versions, the other two look almost exactly alike. I strongly doubt that most people could identify the later PC from the AG pinafore dresses without looking at the tags.
The fabric is a light white cotton. Although the fabric has changed slightly over the years, they are all fairly soft and a little bit see-through. However, the thinness of the fabric isn’t that noticeable and doesn’t really deter from the dress. Molly’s slip also fits nicely underneath.
All three dresses are fairly similar in size. They all fit well on my PC and Mattel Molly dolls. Actually, I would say that the later PC and American Girl version are a little longer and larger than the original Pleasant Company version. Yes, strange, but true.
All three dresses have wide sashes that tie in the back. They don't appear to differ. The dresses also all have Velcro closures. The original PC version has two or three smaller Velcro closures, whereas the other ones have one longer Velcro closure.
Each dress has three layers of rickrack on the pockets and sleeves. While the variations are fairly minor, the color and order of the rickrack have changed over the years. The original birthday dress has light green rickrack, whereas the later Pleasant Company and American Girl ones have bolder green rickrack. In addition, the order of the rickrack on the original dresses is Blue, Red, Green. The order on the later dresses is Green, Blue, Red.
Overall, this dress is one of my favorite Molly dresses. Although the dress is a little bit see-through, I would recommend it without hesitation.
