B:
It was difficult to put a grade on this set. While my children don’t particularly care for it, it’s fairly well designed and has quite a bit of play potential. I’m sure that many children would really enjoy it.
The set contains: a basket, a gingham- and floral-print blanket, two plates with food, two cups, two spoons, and two napkins.

Picnic Basket: The plastic picnic basket is definitely an improvement over the 2001 version. It’s far sturdier and holds all the picnic goodies. However, my three year-old does have a difficult time getting everything in the basket. It’s a bit like a game of Tetris.
Picnic Blanket: The cotton picnic blanket is large enough for two Bittys to share a picnic. It can also double as a baby blanket. The trim coordinates with the 2007 Spring Jumper and Pants sets and the gingham sort of matches the Bitty Basics Sleeper Gown.
Two Plates with Food: While the kids and I would have definitely preferred separate food pieces, I understand how individual pieces could present a choking hazard. Also, while most children would probably be intrigued by the face sandwiches, mine think they look gross with the cream cheese, jam, raisin, cracker, banana, pretzel, and Cheerios. So while the plates/food have quite a bit of play potential, they’re rarely used here or are given to lesser liked dolls.
I’m also amused by AG’s ability to pinkify anything, including sandwiches and ants-on-a-log. It takes some doing. Here are the 2001 and current versions of the sandwich. Obviously, the older version is much larger.

Cups: The green plastic cups are fairly typical baby doll cups. It’s nice that the style can also double as a soup cup. The flowers match those on the table cloth trim.

Spoons: I’m not certain why they chose to include the blue and silver plastic spoons. It doesn’t seem like spoons are commonly used to eat sandwiches or ants-on-a-log. However, they’re quite nice and can be used with other Bitty foods.
Napkins: The napkins match the trim on the picnic blanket. They’re nicely made, useful, and really help complete the set. I especially like how the napkins and spoons can be fastened to the inner portion of the picnic basket lid.

While I understand that the company is American Girl and that they predominately cater to girls 3+, it was nice to see the reintroduction of “baby” boys with the start of the Bitty Twin line. However, AG has yet to create a Bitty Twin food set that isn’t “girly” looking. I really wish that there was a more gender neutral option.
