I purchased Samantha's Pinafore Dress (birthday dress) directly from AG before it was retired. Both the stripped dress and the apron have AG tags.
The dress/apron is supposed to be a 'dressy dress' and that is why the taffeta appears 'thinner' as you have found. It was not meant to be a serviceable fabric for daily wear, but rather a special birthday outfit. Samantha does look lovely in the dress, and I have been pleased with the whole outfit.
