This outfit was worn by Molly (and Emily) in the book Happy Birthday, Molly! It was introduced as Molly's Party Pinafore & Birthday Crown in 1987, and the name changed to Molly's Party Dress in January 2009. The price changed from $24 to $28 in January 2012. The outfit retired with Molly's archival in 2013. It was rereleased in June 2022 as Molly's Birthday Outfit, selling for $38.
Party Pinafore & Birthday Crown description: Three cheers for the birthday girl! Molly’s party pinafore is the perfect dress for a celebration. It has three tiers of ruffles edged in bright-colored rickrack and a sash in back that ties in a bow. Even her anklets have bright red trim. Molly wanted to look particularly pretty for her party, so she brushed out her braids and topped her long wavy hair with a shiny red and gold party crown. Doesn’t she look like a princess?
Birthday Outfit description: Molly and her friend Emily get matching party dresses for Molly’s tenth birthday. This festive outfit includes: A white pinafore dress with three tiers of ruffles at the shoulder, a sash that ties in back, and green, blue, and red rickrack trim, A pair of white ankle socks rimmed in red at the top, A pair of shiny black Mary Janes, A red-and-gold paper birthday crown with “Happy Birthday” in gold script.
The dress seems kind of simple, but it's classic 1940s. It's a crisp white sleeveless dress with cute ruffles trimmed with rick rack on the sleeves and the always cute sash. It's sure to keep Molly cool during the warmer months, not even just for her birthday. The socks that come with the dress are trimmed in red, and my Molly usually wears them with other outfits, too. And the crown, though some people find it tacky, is very cute. It reminds me of party crowns I wore. A.
