This outfit was worn by Molly in the book Changes for Molly as well as the movie Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front. It was originally sold in 1990 as part of the Winter Activities set. It was removed from that set in 1998, and starting in 1999, it was sold separately For $20 as Molly's Miss Victory Costume. It was revised in 2006 and increased in price to $28, and the name changed to Molly's Tap Outfit in 2008. In late 2009 the taps on shoes are plastic, and in January 2012 the price increased to $32. The outfit retired in December 2013 when Molly's collection was archived.
Miss Victory Costume 1999: Molly loves going to her tap dance class, and hopes her teacher, Miss LaVonda, will pick her to be Miss Victory at the “Hooray for the U.S.A.” show. That way, she can wear the sparkly Miss Victory costume with its matching skirt and shiny star headband.
Miss Victory Costume 2006: Molly loves going to her tap dance class, and hopes her teacher, Miss LaVonda, will pick her to be Miss Victory at the “Hooray for the U.S.A.” show. That way, she can wear the sparkly Miss Victory leotard with its matching skirt, shiny star headband, socks, and tap shoes. Includes trading cards.
Tap Outfit 2011: Molly can't wait to wear the Miss Victory costume: a sparkly leotard with a matching skirt, a headband, anklets, and tap shoes.
Original Pleasant Company version
I won this outfit for $11.50 + shipping on ebay. It is tagged Pleasant Company 2008. I really like this outfit and I think it is so cute! The fabric is shiny and satiny like a dance costume should be. The little star on front is made from heavy paper/posterboard and sticks out from the dress part. The sleeves are very tight, which I understand is a characteristic of this dress. I had to tug to get the sleeves right to get the dress velcroed in back. It comes with little panties to wear underneath made from the same material as the dress and they meet Taffy's expectations having elastic in the legs. The crown is made from heavy paper/posterboard type material and is shiny and sparkly. It is very flimsy and creases easily. The fabric in the dress seems to snag easily as well but it's a dance dress and likely Molly won't wear it often.
Grade: B+ for not coming with shoes and being tough to get on and flimsy material in the crown.
