Coconut the pup was first released in 2000. First runs of the Coconut character were heavier, like a paper weight, and did not have the magnetic mouth. The next year, Coconut was changed to have a magnet right under her nose that could hold her toys. Later her weight lightened. In 2009 Coconut again went through a minor change and the magnetic mouth feature was removed.
Coconut is everything a little Westie should be. She has shoe button eyes, a little black nose and lots of white fur. She has a hard plastic body, and older Coconuts are said to feel like a paperweight but the newer ones are light. She has fabric "paw pads" on the bottom. Her "fur" is soft and fluffy. I had to fluff and smooth to make her look like a real Westie. Her most endearing feature is a little head tilt, which our Cairn Terrier, Mischief, used to do when she was listening to us.
Coconut's collar is made from vinyl and the "tag" is plastic. The older leash (2001-2004) is made from braided embroidery floss with a jewlery clasp. The current leash is a more rope-like material. Both leashes have loops to hook over her mom's hand, so she doesn't run away, as terriers are prone to do. They were bred to hunt small game and vermin on the estates of the Highlands in Scotland and can never be trusted off leash because of their high prey instinct. I love that AG recognizes this and includes a leash for Coconut.
She has a magnet in her mouth that holds her toys. It can be a bit tricky to find the magnet because of all her fur. On my older Coconut, the magnet is buried under too much fur and doesn't hold well. On Traveling Ruthie's newer Coconut, the magnet holds fine.
Negatives: Her plastic body isn't good for cuddling and she tends to get dirty after awhile, but that's OK because the only WHITE Westie is one that's been freshly bathed or brushed with baby powder (in shows).
She is a sweet little pet for any American Girl, big or small!
