I had trouble at first with the menorah candles but finally got it.
Like TheSocialSimsScarlett, I just have to wiggle a bit to get them in and out, but it's fine. But sometimes, I just can't get them in and I have to do it a different way--I put the pointy end into the candle sticks. It works for me and its easy to take them out and put them back in that way. You can't tell that it's much different, either.
If you don't mind the candles being permanently in there, you can fill the little candlesticks with glue and press the candles into it, or hot glue the end of the candles and stick it in. I've seen users do it both ways and it works fine---the only issue is that once you do it that way, its in for good.
Sanding is a good idea!
