As a rule the braid on the Mattel ones is very short. Even let out it's not as long as the rest. It changed about 1999(?)

It also varies from doll to doll too though PM or not.

I had a 2006 #15 with a very short braid. It looked an actual mullet out. I hated it so much I rewigged her.

I bought another NIB one from about 2001 ish on eBay and her braid is noticeably longer and while I haven't taken it out yet I can't imagine it would be half as bad as the other one.
