"Camp Treats Set
Item# G0655
A camping trip wouldn't be complete without yummy treats to share and eat! This set includes:
A pretend camp stove with knobs that make clicking sounds when your girl turns them, and legs that fold for easy storage
A flowery tea kettle
A red grill pan
Two half-round pretend grilled sandwiches
Two pretend mini chocolate pies
Pretend melon slices
Two plates
Two cups
A dish towel with canoe graphics
A yellow fabric storage bag
$58"
I don’t understand why AG did not add utensils to eat the pie/pudding with. That said. I like this set a lot. I have Julie’s hibachi but hardly ever lug it out. This grill on the other hand is light and stores in a very small area.
The Grill:
I’m not sure why AG added legs to this piece. The legs are the cheapest aspect and likely to break under rough or young play. (I can see a kid trying to use this as a seat or a step stool.) Most Coleman stoves I have used do not have legs such as these. The legs are a softer less rigid plastic braced with harder blue plastic inserts with star cut-outs. They hinge in a simple pin pivot which seems sturdy enough for regular play.
The lid and body are made of a harder plastic than the legs and appear durable. The lid is embossed with the words ‘American Girl’ and the double star logo. The same logo is rather redundantly plastered on the front of the grill with a sticker or decal.
The individual grill setting knobs and the on/off button are molded in an orangey-pink color that looks garish against the blue of the grill. I would have preferred a medium to dark red. The two grill knobs do 'click’ but the on/off button does not.
The actual cooking grill is made of the same soft plastic as the legs. In this case I think that is a plus since the piece is removable and stiff plastic might snap during play. The two burners are somewhat detailed and the grill pan bottom is lightly textured.
Measurements:
Closed 6 1/4 inches W X 3 3/4 inches D X 1 1/2 inches H
Opened 8 inches W X 4 inches D X 7 inches H
The Tea Kettle:
This is hard plastic molded in a chartreuse color with six orange flower emblems. The working handle is made of metal and plastic. The spout is solid with a molded indentation to represent a true spout. The lid is not removable.
Measurements:
1 3/4 inches Diameter
2 1/2 inches W To tip of spout
1 5/8 inches H Base to top of lid
2 3/8 inches H With handle raised
The Grill Pan:
I can not call this item red. It is molded in the same orangey-pink as the knobs on the stove. A medium or dark red would have been better. The upper piece is embossed with “American Girl” and the double star logo. The upper handle is slightly longer than the lower and has a slight but distinct angle to it. I assume this is to make it easier for little hands to open. The hinge is molded plastic and appears rather sturdy. The grill opens flat to reveal two medium gray grill surfaces with molded raised detail. The sandwich halves do fit in the grill and the grill will close completely.
Measurements:
2 1/2 inches Diameter
1/2 inch High
4 1/2 inches L Hinge to tip of handles
1 3/4 inches Handle length
Two Half-round Pretend Grilled Sandwiches:
I like these more than I thought I would. I don’t know what the contents are supposed to be but there’s a thick red layer, a thin white layer and a medium sized light green layer. The red layer is indented as if it’s three separate pieces. The ‘bread’ is thick and nicely colored but it does lack texture. The ‘grill marks’ are indented and painted in two shades of brown to replicate real grilled bread.
Measurements:
2 to 2 1/4 inches Diameter (they are not quite round)
2 inches Long on the cut edge
1/2 inch High
Two Pretend Mini Chocolate Pies:
These look better in person than on-line but not by much. Both of mine need to be replaced. On one the finish on the ‘chocolate’ is crazed or cracked and on the other there are spots where there is no 'chocolate’ color at all.
If I were going to name these myself I would call them “Smores Pudding”. On top of the chocolate is what I assume to be something replicating three toasted marshmallows. The base resembles a graham cracker crust. The best executed aspect of these pies is the pie tin itself. While it is plastic, the molding is superb and gives an excellent impression of a real mini aluminum pie pan.
Measurements:
1 5/8 inches Diameter
3/4 inches High
Two Pretend Melon Slices:
If there was some texture along the sides of the melon, they would be very realistic. There is texturing where the seeds would have been and a pretty realistic rind. There’s even a separation (a scribed line) between the meat of the melon and the rind.
Measurments:
2 3/8 inches L X 5/8 inches W X 1 inch H
Two Plates:
Hard, light blue, plastic with an orange design of a bird on a flowering branch. In real life they would measure 10 1/2 inches so they are a good size.
Measurement: 3 1/2 inches Diameter
Two Cups:
Hard, light blue, plastic with an orange design of a bird on a flowering branch. Nice size but they have a rather chunky rim, perhaps to make them sturdier.
Measurements:
1 1/2 inches High
1 1/8 inch Bottom Diameter
1 3/8 inch Rim Diameter
7/16 inch Handle Length
1 1/16 inch Handle Height
Dish Towel with Canoe Graphics:
Light muslin with serged edges. Multiple images of an orange canoe and two paddles printed on one side. Approximately 5 inches long by 2 1/4 inches wide. Tagged “Made In China For American Girl”.
A Yellow Fabric Storage Bag:
I don’t understand the design of the drawstring, at all.
The bag itself (5 1/4 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide) is made of a nice lightweight cotton or cotton blend duck. The flowering branch used on the plates and cups is also printed in orange on the front of the bag. There are also two embroidered circles, a flower and a leaf. On the left side is an orange American Girl logo tag. Inside is a “Made In China For American Girl” tag and another tag stamped with “0624 XX”.
Comments:
At $58 this set seemed pricey but I compared this set to the other food sets currently selling at that price point and it seemed like a decent value. With the exception of the Delicious Breakfast set it has more pieces (15) than any of the others.
Fun and Games Table (7 pieces)
Delicious Breakfast (22 pieces)
Sugar and Spice Baking Set (11 pieces)
Julie’s Birthday Goodies (11 pieces)
As I have already mentioned, I’m not a fan of the orangey-pink color they insist on calling red however I do like the orange color used to accent the tea kettle, plates and cups. The blue used for the grill and the lighter blue for the plates and cups are a nice addition to my ever-growing AG food set collection.
Overall Grade: B- (no utensils included and that darn orangey-pink color they used)
