Introduced in 2015, retired in 2018.
When night falls on the rancho, Josefina can have sweet dreams with this set:
• Her wooden bed - it has a distressed off-white finish and a carved head and footboard
• A soft mattress, called a cholcon
• A plump pillow, called an almohada
• A bright woven blanket to ensure a good night’s rest.
This set was originally $85 and is currently on sale for $51. I purchased it with an additional 15% off, which I think made it especially worthwhile.
The design is very similar to Josefina’s original (green) bed. I like the distressed finish and the detail on the headboard and footboard, which each have a different design carved along the top (just like the original bed). The bedposts do curve outward like a sleigh bed, which I think gives it a nice appearance although it does end up taking a bit more room.
The overall dimensions according to AG are 10.25” wide x 10.25” high x 23.5” long. Like a lot of AG furniture, it really isn’t to scale, but there is just enough room for Josefina to lie down and stretch out her feet and for a friend to snuggle in beside her.
The bed feels fairly substantial and seems like it will hold up well. The construction has changed slightly from the first version, so now the screws and washers go in through the posts of the headboard and footboard rather than being hidden under the bed platform.
Here are some pics. First, a photo of the instruction booklet showing the assembly, then the bed frame after it’s put together ...
After the frame gets assembled, then the platform goes on ...
Then the bedding and sweet Josefina ...
Here are a few comparison pics of the components in relation to version I of the bed ...
First, if you look at the headboards and footboard, you can see they have the same curve and basic design, but the newer version is ever so slightly wider at the bottom and also has a wider crossbar. You can see the relative sizes and construction design in these pics. (You can also see the pretend mortise and tenon joints on the sides.) The newer version seems to weigh a bit more than the older version, maybe because of the size.
The colchon and almohada (mattress and pillow) are both very similar to the first version, nice and plump. They feel like cotton but the labels say polyester fiber - maybe that’s the filler? Anyway, here’s what they look like:
Despite the drawstring on the almohada, you can’t actually remove its cover (just like the first version).
The striped blanket is significantly different. Whereas the first version was a very scratchy wool but looked authentic, this version seems cheaply made (smooth synthetic-type material with a clear wrong side) but does have the advantage of not being scratchy. It is also a bit longer and wider than the version I blanket, as you can tell from this photo with the old version resting on top of the new version:
The blanket measures about 15.75” wide and around 20” long without the fringe, or about 26” long including the fringe. Here’s a clearer picture showing the right and wrong sides of the blanket:
Alas, there is no “sheepskin” in this version.
Overall, I give Josefina’s bed a B/B+ at the original price or an A- at the sale price. (I have to take some off for the cheap blanket - surely there must be some alternative less scratchy than the first version but not as cheap as this version!) I don’t think this bed will be around much longer, so I’m glad I got it before it’s gone!
