I get to be the first to review this awesome doll!
As soon as I saw the pictures of the Street Chic dolls-- #89, #90, and #91--I knew #90 would have to come live with me. I've rarely bought a doll so quickly upon release. And she did not disappoint! I could not be happier with her. I think she is basically blue perfection. The rich ultramarine blue of her hair makes me incredibly happy (blue is one of my happy colors!) and as I said elsewhere, she is the perfect combination of fairytale and punk. There have been some concerns voiced that she might be difficult to dress due to the bright color of her hair but I've actually found the opposite to be true: I find her hair a great color to coordinate with other saturated tones and have had no trouble finding her outfits within my AG wardrobe. She's actually quite versatile, being equally happy to dress up or down, go girly or a little more edgy. Mine, whom I've named Stella, definitely prefers the edgier look to balance out her sweet face, but I can imagine that many collectors will have a great time dressing her in more fairytale-esque styles and pastel colors.
Here she is in her arrival outfit. I have to say that the blue theme is part of what sold me on her. I love her funky Meet dress with the magenta side lacing and hoodie. And the boots are awesome and coordinate well with many other modern outfits. (She's shown here with the socks and necklace that come with the Street Chic accessories set).
First things first: her eyes. It took me a few days to realize that her eyes were not the light blue I was expecting. AG calls them "light blue" in her description online (they called Mia's hazel eyes "green" so I always take their description with a grain of salt), but they are definitely not the light blue of #22 or #39, nor are they the dark blue of #27 or Kit. I think they are closer to Marie-Grace's aqua blue. Is this a new light blue? Inquiring minds want to know. Eye color is notoriously difficult to capture in photographs due to context and subtle variations in lighting, etc., but here are a few attempts at eye comparisons (#90 is always on the right):
PM Kirsten and #90
#39 and #90
More recent #22 and #90
#27 and #90
Marie-Grace and #90
Next, as to her hair: It is a rich blue color with lighter blue highlights and arrived in a cute side French braid that was already quite messy so I immediately set it free. The braid gave it some loose waves that have already mostly relaxed themselves. There are short pieces that frame her face on each side. I've noticed a bit of variation in the wigs of the #90s I've seen pictures of. Mine has the lighter blue highlights sewn beneath the darker blue top layer but some #90s appear to have a more streaked top layer. I think this is cool because if one wanted twins (not that any of us are that crazy, haha) they wouldn't be exactly the same. Hmmm......
I feel Stella's wig is an average thickness--not nearly as thin as my Kira's but not as thick as the Julie dolls I've had in the past. I'm fine with the amount of hair she has. The only fault I have to find with it is the way AG has constructed the wig. I've seen similar issues with other recent dolls (including Kira and #68). The top layer is quite thin and there are places where you can see the wig cap on the sides if you pull the hair aside a certain way.
It doesn't really bother me but I think AG could improve their wig construction, especially as there are so many far superior competitors available these days on Etsy.
Here's a small sampling of Stella in a few of my favorite modern outfits (I don't plan to dress her in anything historical as it doesn't suit her personal aesthetic). So far I feel she looks best in rich, saturated, coordinating or complimentary tones such as purple, orange, aqua, and yellow, and high contrast neutrals like white and black. I believe that makes her a spring but I'm not sure? She also loves anything a little edgy or sparkly. Any variation in the color of her hair is due to my basic camera and my total lack of photography skills. Sometimes my camera really struggles to capture the true blue of her hair.
I'm so glad AG made this girl! She's bringing me a lot of springtime joy. Grade: A+
