This Special Edition, 35th Anniversary Collection, was released by American Girl on the 4th of May, 2021. It is a throwback to the original doll and accessories - not exactly the same, but similar enough to make a lot of people happy.
Here’s the website description:
Kirsten was one of the first six dolls introduced by Pleasant Company, now American Girl. We’re celebrating the 35th anniversary of her launch with this special collection, which includes:
SKU#: GPM80 $150
Here she is reclining in her box. The box is maroon with a window, and it says “The American Girls Collection” along with Kirsten Larson’s name, year (1854), and picture on the lower half. It also says it is “Kirsten Larson’s 35th Anniversary Collection.” I appreciate this special commemorative packaging.
Inside the box, Kirsten’s wearing her outfit and apron. Her bonnet and the rest of her accessories (spoon bag, wooden spoon, handkerchief, and necklace) are in separate plastic bags. She also comes with her Meet Kirsten book and a maroon-bordered trifold pamphlet, “Celebrating 35 Years.”
On to the doll! Kirsten has very blue eyes, line eyebrows, and, of course, blond hair with bangs. She has neck strings, and while I didn’t take photos, her fabric body is a pretty good color match to her vinyl.
The Kirsten I picked out has bangs that look kind of tousled, which somehow looked more playful or mischievous to me, but most others in the store had bangs that laid flatter. Here’s a close-up of her eyes (sorry about the eyelash shadows) and her hairstyle, including the braids and short hairs at the back.
Here are a few more photos of her outfit. The blue flowered dress has Velcro closures on the wrists and up the back. The apron and spoon bag tie around the waist, and each have a functional pocket. I really like the details on her spoon bag! The handkerchief has the decorative stitching around the edge, like the original. Kirsten also has white pantalettes trimmed with lace, striped knit socks, and a pair of very uncomfortable-looking brown “boots”. The amber-colored heart pendant is on a thin brown ribbon necklace, which has a hook and eye closure.
I have most of Kirsten’s collection from earlier versions and at some point I’ll pull them out for more detailed comparisons, but in general I’m really happy with this 35th Anniversary Special Edition! There might be minor differences, but I appreciate the overall similarity and attention to detail.
The one piece of her collection that I didn’t previously have is Kirsten herself, and I suspect that the doll might look more different from her earlier counterparts than the outfit or accessories do. Overall though, I like this version. I’m glad that AG brought her back for the anniversary celebration, and I think the quality, playability, and value all earn an A.

- A red striped apron with a pocket
- A pair of white pantalettes with lace trim at the bottom and an elastic waist
- A pair of striped knit socks
- A pair of brown faux-leather boots
