After a long day in the waves, Joss and her surf crew are hungry! They can cook up a delicious meal right on the beach with this set. It includes:
A portable grill with color-change technology that “cooks” the food—they get grill marks after being exposed to the special lighting inside! It has legs that fold up and side tables that detach so it fits in the surf bus.
A pair of tongs to remove the food from the grill
Two corncobs that get grill marks when exposed to the special lighting
Two color-change kabobs that can be “cooked” on the grill
Two tamales that change color to look charred when they’re on the grill
Two beach drinks with straws to cool down
Two plates with multicolored artwork
All food items are pretend.
SKU#: GNF61 $50
This is a set I was on the fence about buying for a long time. I think it has a lot of nice features, but ultimately I decided it probably wouldn't get much use here, and since I never saw it on sale before it retired, I never got the extra push I would have needed in order to pull the trigger on buying it. My photos are from the Joss display in the old AGPLA store at the Grove.
The main grill component is made of shiny red plastic, with silver colored legs and side trays and a silver and black interior. The leg construction is really thoughtful, with hinges at slightly different heights so that the legs can neatly fold up under the grill. I didn't get a photo of the legs folded, but the design looks very similar to the current grill being sold as part of the Grill and Games set, just a different (and in my opinion, better) color. The side trays are meant to hold food and utensils while cooking. I really like that they also detach, and that feature plus the folding legs make the whole set up pretty compact for storage (whether at home or in the back of Joss's surf bus).
When the lid of the grill closes, a light turns on that "cooks" the food by leaving grill marks on it. I always think this kind of feature makes a set more novel and fun. In the store, the grill marks were more noticeable on the corn than on the other pieces (sorry I didn't get a picture of this), but from what I remember reading elsewhere, this might vary depending on the particular pieces you end up with. The lighting feature takes batteries to work effectively. There are also little dials on the front of the grill which can be turned but don't really do anything.
The extra pieces include two plastic plates that have the pastel rainbow pattern that shows up elsewhere in Joss's collection, a pair of pink lemonade drinks with straws, silver tongs, two corn cobs, two kabobs, and two pair of joined tamales. All of the food, unsurprisingly, looks kind of plasticky, but nothing is terribly objectionable. The tamales are probably my least favorite because they’re joined together. All of the food items are supposed to show the char or grill marks when activated by the lighting feature of the grill.
As stated before, I was really tempted to purchase this set when it was available. I love the red color and all the thoughtful features, including the compactness and the color change feature of the food. Overall I would give it an A.
