Released in 1997 for $20, retired in 2001. After retirement, the lantern was added to the Christmas Accessories set.
Papá lit the way of the Las Posadas procession with a wooden lantern that had windows made from a mineral called mica. Ana carried a silver tray piled high with bizcochito cookies. You can bake real bizcochitos using the simple recipe included with the pretend cookies. Help Josefina make beautiful paper flowers called ramilletes to decorate the church altar for Christmas Eve—a complete ramillete kit is included.
This set is retired.
The lantern is made of wood with little plastic windows meant to look like that mica stuff. The windows always seemed like they were put on wrong as they are glued to the outside, not the inside. But that's the way it was meant to be.
The plate of cookies is nice, although the cookies are those rubbery things that I know many people don't like. It is nice that you get the recipe to make your own real bizcochitos.
My favorite part of this set is the Ramillete kit. There was also a little bottle of glue that came with the set originally. I did make one ramillete and there are enough materials to make more, but you would need to find another little stick and sprig of greener. Pretty easy to find at most craft stores.
Overall grade: B+
If you can find it for not to much on ebay go for it, it's nice to have the old mini craft kits that seemed to be important to each doll's collection back in the day.

This is the only picture I have (I sold this set awhile back). Not the best, but it shows the ramilletes stick and sprigs. Maybe you can find a silver coaster that is similar to the tray.

Frankly, my little tray got really tarnished. Granted, I haven't yet tried to clean it, but from someone who owns an original version, the set definitely seems worth replicating rather than paying high prices for. The red and purple stars and green shapes are just tissue paper... very basic. EDIT: Wait, I might take that back. I'm second-guessing now. They were either tissue or a very, very thin silky material. But I think tissue. Thin, almost flimsy feeling, either way. The tan colored pieces felt like pressed straw, if that makes any sense. They had a corrugated feel to them, or ridged/rippled. Not very good at describing these things, but they were a thin material, though thicker than the tissue, obviously.

The lantern on the left is a Pleasant Company lantern; the one on the right is from the burgundy box era (it came with the chicken and chiles set). I actually prefer the Mattel one! The colors are deeper and brighter. Unfortunately, neither lantern ever came with a candle, despite the little candle holder inside. It's a little detail that really shouldn't have been looked over. I haven't made the ramillete set, and I will assume that the glue has long since dried up. I love the tray of bizcochitos. They're weird and gummy, but they look really cute. Lucky they're fake, because I hate anise cookies! I haven't tried the recipe yet for that reason. Grade: B

I just rediscovered that I have this set stashed away!
The best part is the metal tray which can be used for Felicity or Samantha or someone more modern as well. The tray tarnishes when not in use though which isn't good but it means that it's not plastic.
The cookies are kind of rubbery but too rubbery like Samantha's food. The cookies aren't clay either, more like soft plastic. They are bigger than I thought they'd be, so the scale may not be correct. T hey could also double for Felicity's Shrewsbury cakes or sugar cookies.
The worst part of the set is the lantern! It's made from real wood and leather, but cheap wood. The plastic windows are glued on the outside which looks odd. The little leather latch is a nice touch and seems to be real lather. The door on mine doesn't close all the way.
Grade: B+

I just got the silver tray and five bizcochitos which someone sold me from a Josefina lot they received. I'm quite pleased with it, although everything seems a bit off-scale - it looks more like a plate than a platter, and why are there only five cookies? Maybe this is the platter after everyone at the Christmas fiesta took their share. The platter itself is heavy and apparently real silver as it tarnishes like mad. The cookies are sweet and look just like the book cookies. It gets an A- for scale issues.

Older PC lantern on left, Mattel one on the right: Size comparison of bread from her Birthday Treats, bread from the revised Adobe Oven set, and the bizcochitos: Materials for the ramilletes ready to hand in the Herb Gathering basket.

The bizcochitos are so cute! The lantern matches the chicken and chiles one. The ramillettes craft makes adorable Christmas decorations.
