Kaya's hair falls to her ankles when out of the braids. She only has short hairs on the back of her head so that may be a little strange but it does not hinder the style-ability of her wig. Ignore the corn, Kaya has been plucked from a Thanksgiving display. Please excuse Julie, she wanted to get photographed as well:

My dd just dressed Kaya in Josefina's dress last week. She is gorgeous in Josefina's clothing!

Kaya's unique face mold makes her very special. (I wish AG would use the mold again, perhaps for a My American Girl doll with very different coloring.) I really enjoyed Kaya's stories and I think she is a wonderful way to help kids learn about Native American culture.
My Kaya was purchased the day she was available from American Girl in 2002. She is one of the slightly darker skin dolls with the meet dress with the straight shoulders and tie belt. I don't have any problem with either of these -- I think the dress looks fine and the belt is not that difficult to tie (but I'm an adult).
Overall, I wouldn't recommend Kaya for a young girl because of her hair. She's less likely to appeal to the smaller girls because she's not girly or frilly by modern standards but she is one of my personal favorites. I love her serene expression and her place in history.

Kaya is a wonderful doll. Her hair is good for play and she's very cute. I love the change of the mouth. Her wig scalp shows a bit and the hair is textured, similar to Addy's. I'm glad to have her in my collection.

I have a darker skinned Kaya from 2000-ish, without the rosy coloring. She looks more natural and blissful than alot of Kaya's I've seen, and while I did take her hair down once, I've managed to put it back into her braids without too much fuss. I keep Kaya modern, and she looks adorable in most anything I dress her up in. Her hair is textured but not as textured as Addy's, feeling kind of rough but manageable. It feels a lot like my mother's hair, and she has a lot of native blood herself. If purchasing for a small child, I would almost recommend a hair cut by a professional. I do think her face looks awfully Caucasian-it's so round and full it just strikes me as European, but I do think she's a lovely doll. (Besides, high cheekbones would probably be a bit difficult to establish in vinyl...maybe a cross between Marie Grace's mold and Kaya's? The eyes should be wider set too.) Overall I give her a B. The hair is bad for play as pretty as it is, and her collection, while limited by her time period and life style, could use some puffing up. Maybe more craft pieces? I do love her serene look and coloring, but her skin is not at all like my grandfather's. He and many other members of my family have an almost...reddish undertone to their skin, this wonderful shade of red clay and brown. I have some comparisons below with Cécile, for those who are curious. Kaya in Garden Outfit by RawrLiciaSkin Comparison with Cécile by RawrLiciaSkin tone with flash by RawrLiciaKaya was my first doll. I was dying for an AG doll and was borderline obsessed with the catalog. I had read the Kirsten books and thought I wanted Kirsten, but honestly I would have taken ANY of the AG dolls. My sister and I got to play with a cousin's Samantha and Addy, but I wanted -my own- doll. My parents wouldn't get me one because they thought I was too old (I was eleven or twelve at the time). They were rather well off but preferred to buy me electronics for some reason. (Not to sound ungrateful.) My poorer mother somehow put the money together and bought Kaya since she is Native American. My mother didn't know Kaya was Naz Pierce (we are Chippewa), but she wanted her dark haired, copper skinned little girl to have a doll that spoke to her heritage. As an adult, I recognize the hardships my mother endured, and how much a set back the expensive doll must have been. I didn't even mean to tell her about how much I wanted an AG-she just sort of found out.

Adding a picture of my "Mona Lisa." I got Kaya before BeForever, after having to save twice for her (long story.) I had the feeling BeForever would do something to her meet outfit, so I took the plunge. Anyway, she's one of my top favorite dolls, with that sweet, fascinating smile that makes her unique among all the 18" dolls of the line; she's a heart stealer. I believe Kaya is a must in every historical collection.

I got my Kaya a few months before Beforever. Kaya's wig is silky and soft. It can get tangled if not careful.

I bought BF Kaya just before Christmas (the 15th maybe?) so that my purchase would generate a donated doll. While I couldn't tell you anything else that might have changed from pre-BF Kaya to BF Kaya, I can tell you this much is new. Kaya still mostly boxed, complete with her hairnet that is tied underneath her braids which means it's a royal pain to get off without mussing up her braids at least a little. Boo and bullfrogs. However, Kaya herself is adorable. Her hair is very soft and her braids aren't as tight as I thought they'd be. Which is probably just as well because her dress's velcro snagged one of them when I was switching her into something a little less likely to serve as catnip. Luckily, Kaya has a whole bag of new stuff to try out thanks to all the sales AG did this season. (rofl) I'd definitely recommend BF Kaya if she's on your radar.

I do not like the Befoever version of Kaya. Her new face looks like a bitty twin's I will be looking for an older version on Ebay soon.

I also really like Kaya's face. My Kaya goes back and forth between modern and historical so I have taken her hair out. It is definitely more coarse than hair like Isabelle or McKenna, but I wouldn't say it's textured. I find it easy to style and not very difficult to take care of as long as you're careful. I took lots of comparison pictures, but please excuse the dolls outfits, they're wearing their Halloween costumes!
Her long hair:
Here she is with Sonali. Sonali is much darker.
Her hair is darker too, and of course, curlier.
Here is a comparison of length of hair with Kanani. I'm not sure if some Kayas have longer hair than mine, but Kanani's is about an inch of two longer than Kaya's.
Addy's hair is also longer than Kaya's.
And finally a picture between Kaya and #11. I have a really old #11 (1999) and their hair texture is very similar but #11's is black, whereas Kaya's is a rich brown.
