The item was introduced in 2002 and retired in 2008.
This pretty woven hat is a gift from Kaya’s grandmother—a sign that she’s growing up. Her bracelet would have been carved from an antler. Kaya carries her special things in a painted parfleche that folds shut like an envelope.
This is a gorgeous set. The hat is lined and has two leather thongs with tiny feathers on it. The bracelet is mock bone (plastic). You need to untie the leather thong of the bracelet, put it on Kaya, and retie it. This might be difficult for a small child or someone with short fingernails.
The parfleche is very nice but looks kind of fake. It's unfortunate it's not larger, so you could store more of Kaya's things in it.

I purchased the set when it was on sale from AG. I love the hat, and bracelet but I agree that the parfleche should be larger. Not only to store more stuff but to be more in scale.

This set is great! The hat is so nice when it is put on Kaya properly (like in the picture above.) Historical problem: the hat would likely not have been lined. There's a reason it looks like a basket - it could be used as one! And most functional baskets aren't lined. The feathers on the leather trim is a great touch.
The bracelet is kind of an eh; it's plastic and definitely feels like it.
The parfleche is awful. You can put, maybe, her bag and belt pouch in it. It's supposed to hold her adorned dress, and certainly doesn't! Plus it just looks cheap.
So, hat: A+. Bracelet: B. Parfleche: D. Overall, a B-.

The parfleche is actually a lot bigger than I thought it would be, and it holds a lot more than I expected. It does look kind of cheap, but no more so than some of the other things in the AG collection. I'd upgrade the grade on it to a C+ or B-.
The bracelet is pretty cool, but the leather tie sucks. If the opening were just a smidge smaller, it could be put on Kaya's wrist without needing a tie at all.

Kaya’s Hat & Parfleche Item# WSOA $20 "Kaya has these unique items that she treasures: * A pretty woven hat given to her as a present by her grandmother—a sign that Kaya is growing up * A bracelet that would have been carved from an antler * A real leather parfleche that folds shut like an envelope to carry her special things" This is something that Kaya needs and it being on clearance now for $10 doesn't look good for Kaya. You'd better get it soon! Grade A.

Hat & Parfleche WSOA: $20 Grade: B
When Purchased: I purchased this set directly from AG in 2007.
Description: (color, fabric, materials, fit) The hat is very nicely woven and lined inside. The parfleche is leather and has a painted-on deisgn. The bracelet is plastic with a leather tie. The hat fits Kaya, but is tricky around the seashells in her braids. The bracelet fits well, but has to be untied, then re-tied on her wrist. The parfleche is ok, but nothing to jump up and down about.
Durability: The hat and parfleche are very durable, however the bracelet (espeically the tie) are delicate.
Playability: All items in this set have nice play value, but the strings to tie the bracelet are short and would be hard for small hands.
Value for the money: I feel this set is worth the money (similar to her meet accessories)
Overall Grade: B

Kaya's parfleche seems to be made from something like real leather. It looks painted and it unties to open it. It's very small inside and doesn't look like it will even hold an extra dress. The hat is great! It is soft, woven natural material in a geometric design. There is a lather tassel with tiny beads and feathers on the end. The inside of the hat is lined. The set also includes a "bone" bracelet. It's plastic and is designed to look like it is painted. It ties with a leather thong. I tried to put the bracelet on Kaya and broke the leather tie. It is very fragile. This set is worth the $10 sale price and probably a bit more. I am very sad it is retiring because Kaya has so little. Grade: A-

This just came in the mail yesterday. I love this set! The hat is nice, although it does fall off sometimes, but that's my fault. My cat loves the tassle thing on top, unfortunately! The bracelet is just...meh...a piece of plastic. It's cute though! The parfleche is nice. I don't think it will hold much but it's a good display item! from me! No + just because of the cheap-ish bracelet.

I bought this set when it was on clearance many years ago. I love the hat, it really adds to the overall effect of the Adorned Deerskin dress. The hat is very nice woven material and is lined. The parfleche is made out of some leathery type or vinyl material and has a colorful design on it. It looks very pretty when used in a doll scene. Great set, I give this one an A.

My only complaint about this set is that the parfleche is rather small. I wish it was actually big enough to store things. The hat looks wonderful with the Adorned Deerskin Dress.

Beautiful. The bracelet strap is seeing some wear. The parfleche holds a lot of accessories.

I like how Kaya's hat, bracelet, and parfleche set are really specific to Kaya's region and culture. They help keep her offerings from being a generic "Indian" theme, since not all Indians wore the special "basket-style" hat worn by the Plateau Indians! The hat is the best part, it is kind of odd that it is woven of like a twine material, but I think it is meant to represent the hempen "cord" Speaking Rain made in the books. It is lined to prevent Kaya's hair from snagging and is edged with the same leather as her adorned dress. I love the little tassels with feathers and beads! The beads are also the same as those used on her adorned dress, a perfect match. The bracelet is a cool accessory, I like the idea of it being etched bone, but it looks quite plasticky. The prototype shown on the pamphlet seems to be a thicker plastic, and I think that looked better and more like bone. I really don't like the closure used for the bracelet. I appreciate the authenticity, but it is hard to tie that tiny thong. I would have preferred the bracelet were a bangle, or if they wanted to keep the appearance of the realistic closure, I would have liked a notch to slide the knotted cord into instead of having to thread and tie it every time. I'm conflicted on the parfleche. It is cool to look at and I love that it was included in her collection, but I don't love its looks. It is made of leather, but coated in this weird beige vinyl which has the "painted design" printed on top. The design looks fake and is very pale compared to the catalog images as well as realistic extant parfleches, which have much brighter, solid designs. On the plus side, I was able to fit her adorned dress and moccasins inside, just like in the book! I'm not sure why other reviewers were unable to fit things in theirs, all I did was fold the dress up and it fit just fine. Despite a few issues I would still recommend this set for Kaya collectors if just for the hat alone! I will give the entire set a B+.
