Kaya's Tatlo and Travois set was released in 2002 and retired in 2018. Her Dog, Tatlo (without the travois) was reintroduced in 2019, and retired mid-December 2023.
Tatlo and Travois: In Kaya and Lone Dog, Lone Dog’s pup Tatlo becomes Kaya’s dog as her family begins their journey to the camas meadows. On the trip, Tatlo can pull a travois loaded with Kaya’s bedding. A furry blanket cushions his back.Dog, Tatlo: When the Nez Perce traveled, dogs were responsible for guarding the camp. Kaya names her puppy Tatlo, or ground squirrel, because he’s so small. But he grows into a smart and loyal companion. He has plush fur and intelligent eyes.I don't have the complete set, only Tatlo. Tatlo stands about 9 inches tall and is about 10 inches from nose to tail. I was surprised at his size considering the other girls' pets that I have. He is very plush and stuffed with fluff (unlike Coconut and Licorice.) He has different colors of fur which make him look more like a real dog. His tail and his legs have wires in them so that he can bend and pose all kinds of ways. His tail has a furry tip so when it's bent toward his head (as a husky would carry his tail) he looks very authentic. He has bright yellow eyes that can bug out a bit if you play with him too much. Then you have to push them back into his head to make him look more normal again. I think he is a bit expensive, but Kaya relies on her dog, so we needed to get him. Grade A I don't have the travois, so we'll leave that to someone else to review here.

I got Tatlo and Travois last week and they're great. Thanks to the help of the board I figured out how to harness Tatlo to the travois since there were no instructions included from the eBay seller. It was well worth the eBay price since my niece will love it.

Since I have had so many people ask how to harness poor Tatlo I figure I will show you my little tutorial I made for another thread.

Tatlo & Travois WDAD: $36 Grade: BWhen Purchased: I purchased Tatlo & Travois directly from AG in 2007. Description: Tatlo is stuffed plush and has muli-colored fur with lighter color fur around his feet, mouth, and eyes and his eyes are yellow-ish. Tatlo has some wire pieces in him but not stiff enough to make him keep certain poses. There is a white fur piece included to keep on his back. The travois is made from plastic sticks and leather/suede straps. It isn't hard to secure the straps once you know how, but the top of the travois either seems to rest on Tatlo's head or off to the side. Durability: This seems to be a very durable piece, especially with the travios being made from plastic. Playability: I believe Tatlo & Travois have great playability. You can add Kaya's doll and cradleboard to the travios and have Tatlo carry it along. Tatlo (IMHO) has more playability than the travois. Value for the money: This is on the pricy side, but Tatlo is very important in Kaya's stories. Overall Grade: B (because I would have liked to have seen the travois made from wood).

Tatlo himself gets an A for cuteness. Sure, he's just a plushie, but he's a cute plushie and I didn't pay anything near the retail for him.
Drop the grade to C if you pay the retail price.
The travois gets an F. This is just too fragile and breaks too easily in shipping. Even if it hadn't broken just getting it home, there's no way I could have avoided breaking it next time I move. And it's too small to really carry anything. A travois for Steps High could be cool, though.
Recommended price: All of the AG pets are ovepriced, but working within that framework I'd go up to $16 for Tatlo himself.
That being said, all of the AG pets are overpriced and $10 is probably more fair.
He's still cute and still an important part of Kaya's stories, but if you can find a cheaper offbrand or ebay one for less, go ahead.

I give this an A. Kaya has tucked her target and shield, as well as her parfleche, onto the travois and that works very well. I don't think the travios is fragile - and I appreciate the realistic, wood-looking parts. I too thought Tatlo was rather large, but someone pointed out that after all, Kaya is a young girl, and huskies, etc. are very big dogs. I like his realistic appearance - I don't want my dolls' pets to look like stuffed toy animals!

We got Talto & Travois today and Talto is now asleep in bed with my daughter. I am undecided about the travois. I like the fact that is can be taken apart to make storage easier, but I don't like that is seems a little flimsy when put together.
Talto gets an A from us because he is so cute and authentic looking. I would rate the travois a B- since it seems flimsy.

Tatlo rocks. I'm not much for buying the AG plushies, but Tatlo is a unique critter, and Kaya needed him. I got mine alone from eBay and I would not pay more than $15 for him if going that route. He is a sturdy guy and has a very expressive face. I chose to get Tatlo alone after inspecting the travois and deciding it was a piece of fragililty I could do without for the money I'd spend on it. Travois = D and Tatlo = A.

I love Tatlo. As you will see... I bought my first Tatlo, named Howler, probably in 2003 -- new from AG, with the travois. I like the travois for carrying light items. Like cats or small snowmen, for example. I tend to use it in the winter for some reason. For several years Howler was on his lonesome. He linked up with Zhindi, a JLY#2 from ebay, and was happy having his own person. But after a bad time with some renegade snow people, he felt it would be nice to have back-up. So I bought one Tatlo from ebay without the travois and I swapped someone something they wanted (I've forgotten what!) for a new Tatlo from AG, with another travois. The new Tatlo is named Snapsome and the ebay sidekick is called Kang. All was well until recently, when Howler decided he needed to lead a PACK of wolves. Two other wolves was not enough to be a pack. So I found a nice Tatlo here on PT. His name is Rowlf and he looks like there's a question mark after it. Rowlf is on your far left in back, then Kang and Snapsome. Howler is in front. Howler was now happy. He felt the mantle of leadership falling over his shoulders. However, I began to fall for all the different faces. And I was bidding for another Tatlo on ebay anyway, whom I won. And before the auction ended, I asked JSMT to choose the perfect new Tatlo from AGB in Natick. So the next two arrived fairly close together. The ebay Tatlo has a very funny expression and a crooked nose, so I'm calling him Quirk. (Due apologies to Quirked!) And the newest member of the pack is quite different from the others, with a narrower head. More feminine. So she's a girl named Tailina. I think even Howler will agree that we have a full pack now! Of course Howler is over the moon about Tailina. She's the one with the narrow face and sexy stripe on your right. Looking at the guys, you see a lot of personality in their faces. Snapsome, Kang, Rowlf and Quirk (left to right) Only Howler has no hint of a face stripe so if your Tatlo has no stripe, he might be 6 or 7 years old. What I find most interesting is that the newest Tatlo, Tailina, has no wires in her tail or her ears. All my other Tatlos have wires so you can pose their ears, move their tails and I think there's an armature that lets you pose their legs. Tailina has beautiful soft fur and is very cuddly but the armatures are gone. Moral of the tail -- when buying a brand new Tatlo, make sure the ears are where you want them! And I do like the travois. I have 3 of them now. I glue them together so the poles stay put and put up with the storage issues. So Tatlo gets an A -- and I guess the wired Tatlos get an A+. And the travois is probably a C.

Tatlo is gorgeous and I love the travois. I like how it shows that dogs were working partners of the Nez Perce. Tatlo displays nicely with the modern doll husky.

Cute set. It's good for Kaya to have a companion. And also to have the travois is great because it's mentioned so much in her stories.

I definitely want to add a more detailed review of Tatlo and his travois once I can take some decent photos, but I wanted to quickly add this one that I took for another thread.
When I received my Tatlo direct from AG in late 2015, I was really surprised because he did not look like his stock photo at all! I ordered an eBay one, which looked more like the stock photo, and when that Tatlo arrived I could feel that he had the wire, posable armature. So this photo is a good illustration of a relatively early Tatlo, and his 2015 counterpart. eBay Tatlo is on the left, 2015 Tatlo is on the right.
eBay Tatlo has a bit of a "crazy-eyed" look going on, while AG 2015 Tatlo looks kinda dopey, and more like a ground squirrel than a dog! For reference, here is Tatlo's stock photo as of April 2016:

With so many pieces in Kaya's collection retiring recently, I decided to stop by the store today and pick up Tatlo before he's gone. I already have two earlier Tatlos, both purchased new with the travois back in about 2017. Like most things, though, Tatlo has evolved over time, and I like the most recent version even better - especially since I already have the travois! All of the Tatlos that I have have plush bodies without any armature wires. They're all soft and pretty cute in my opinion, but the 2017ish versions do have a goofier facial expression. They have prominent light colored circles around their eyes and the dark streak down their muzzles, and while 2023 Tatlo also has these markings, the transition is a little less harsh. 2023 Tatlo also has an endearing tilt to his head, as if he just heard something or is thinking something over, rather than just standing there looking worried or goofy. (2023 Tatlo is on the far right) The 2023 Tatlo is a little chonkier that the 2017ish version, and one of the things I noticed first (and that helped convince me I needed another Tatlo in the pack) is that this guy's tail curves up and he carries it over his back, just like the much-loved malamutes I lived with for many years. My other Tatlos have tails that stick out and curve a little to one side or the other, but they don't curve up over their backs. (From reading descriptions and seeing pictures of the earlier armatured versions, it looks like this may have been a possibility with the earliest Tatlos, just not the ones in the interim.) (2023 Tatlo is on the far right in these pics, too.) At some point I'll try out the travois on this guy; I haven't done it yet, so can't speak to whether it works just as well on him as on the earlier Tatlos. But at the very least, he makes a good companion, and I'm glad he joined our pack!
