In the 1998 catalog, the ornament set and tree were sold separately. The ornaments are listed as code GXAD and sold for $32. In the 1999 Holiday catalog, the tree & trimmings set and the ornament set were sold together as a combined set, GXTC, for $28, with this description: "Oh, Christmas Tree! Buy the tree, get the ornaments FREE! Brighten your American Girl's holiday celebration with this beautiful Christmas tree trimmed with lights that work, sparkling garland, a shiny star topper, and a golden shimmery skirt. Now, when you order the tree, you'll also receive a set of more than 100 ornaments FREE! Ornaments include an assortment of tiny snowflakes, bells, balls, teardrops, frosted icicles, birds, bows, candy canes, and hooks to hang them. A dazzling centerpiece for the holidays." The only ornaments not listed in the new description are the figures, so I'm not sure if they were still included in 1999 or not. I don't have a 2000 catalog to see how the set was listed that year.
9 glittery snowflakes: White plastic snowflakes. Mine have just a tiny bit of white glitter on them here and there, but I got the set secondhand, and they probably had more glitter on them when they were new.
6 shiny glass bells and 6 glass teardrops: These are beautiful, but so, so fragile. They come in a flimsy molded plastic tray inside a cardboard box. One of my glass teardrops shattered to dust when I tried to pry it out of the plastic tray. I've never put them back in their original box, and instead store them in a sturdy lidded box with lots of tissue and bubble wrap. They're lightweight, thin, metallic glass, with designs painted on in gold glitter. The loops at the top are metal. My set came with 2 yellow bells, 2 red bells, 2 dark blue bells, 2 yellow teardrops, 2 red teardrops, 1 green teardrop, and 1 light blue teardrop. Other sets I've seen for sale have the same 5 colors, but not always the same combinations.
18 frosted icicles: I can't tell for sure if these are plastic or glass. I think it's hard plastic that looks convincingly like frosted glass. They're pretty and don't feel too fragile.
12 colored balls: These aren't balls at all - They're ornaments in the shape of light bulbs. They're made from translucent colored plastic. The light bulb "base" where the ornament hook attaches is a separate piece of metallic plastic. Several of mine have had the bulb part fall out of the base, but they're easy enough to glue back together. The set comes with 3 green, 3 yellow, 3 red, and 3 blue.
6 assorted birds: Little birds covered with real feathers. They don't look like they were originally meant to be ornaments. They each have a wire coming out where their feet would be that can be twisted around the tree branch to hold them on. The set comes with 2 red birds, 2 blue, and 2 white. The red and blue birds also have a white plastic stick hanging down. Not sure what that's for.
12 assorted figures: These are little cheap plaster figurines with messy-looking paint, the kind of thing you would have found at the dollar store back in the day. They have attached gold thread loops for hanging. The set includes a rocking horse, a soldier, a bell with a bow, a drum, a cardinal, a gingerbread man, a sleigh, a pair of candy canes with a bow, a Santa, a dog in a stocking, a single candy cane with a bow, and a teddy bear (I'm missing those last 2).
12 velveteen bows: Bows made from red velvet ribbon with gold pipe cleaners twisted around the center.
12 assorted bells: Metallic plastic bells. 3 red, 3 green, 3 silver, 3 gold.
12 candy canes: Made from twisted pipe cleaners.
25 mini glass balls: These are metallic plastic, not glass. The ones I have look the same as the ones in the catalog photo, so I'm not sure if the set ever came with glass balls instead of plastic, or if it's just a mistake in the description. Either way, I prefer these plastic ones since they're not as fragile.
The 100 ornament hooks are in a separate package and have to be attached when you first use the set.
And here's the tree all put together with the ornaments:
The ornaments don't necessarily look like they go together, but the overall effect reminds me of my human-sized Christmas tree with no particular decorating scheme, so I like it.
