Coconut the pup was first released in 2000. First runs of the Coconut character were heavier, like a paper weight, and did not have the magnetic mouth. The next year, Coconut was changed to have a magnet right under her nose that could hold her toys. Later her weight lightened. In 2009 Coconut again went through a minor change and the magnetic mouth feature was removed.Coconut is everything a little Westie should be. She has shoe button eyes, a little black nose and lots of white fur. She has a hard plastic body, and older Coconuts are said to feel like a paperweight but the newer ones are light. She has fabric "paw pads" on the bottom. Her "fur" is soft and fluffy. I had to fluff and smooth to make her look like a real Westie. Her most endearing feature is a little head tilt, which our Cairn Terrier, Mischief, used to do when she was listening to us. Coconut's collar is made from vinyl and the "tag" is plastic. The older leash (2001-2004) is made from braided embroidery floss with a jewlery clasp. The current leash is a more rope-like material. Both leashes have loops to hook over her mom's hand, so she doesn't run away, as terriers are prone to do. They were bred to hunt small game and vermin on the estates of the Highlands in Scotland and can never be trusted off leash because of their high prey instinct. I love that AG recognizes this and includes a leash for Coconut. She has a magnet in her mouth that holds her toys. It can be a bit tricky to find the magnet because of all her fur. On my older Coconut, the magnet is buried under too much fur and doesn't hold well. On Traveling Ruthie's newer Coconut, the magnet holds fine. Negatives: Her plastic body isn't good for cuddling and she tends to get dirty after awhile, but that's OK because the only WHITE Westie is one that's been freshly bathed or brushed with baby powder (in shows). She is a sweet little pet for any American Girl, big or small! Grade: A

does anyone have a first edition Coconut? Someone just told me that she purchased a Coconut for each of her two granddaughters and the second one was 1/3 the size of the first and not as well made.

I just recently saw a westie stuffed animal in JCpenney's that looks really similar to Coconut. I'm not sure of scale to the doll however as I've never seen Coconut. I plan on picking him up next time I'm at the mall. (He's $6 with some perfume I think)

Mine is not heavy at all. She's very lightweight and cute as a button. I better alert my Westie friends to JC Penney. They have Coconut just because she's a Westie!

I have a first edition Coconut and she is extremely heavy. I always wonder why they made her so heavy!

I got my Coconut on Feb. 1st, 2007, with Marina. A couple days ago I realized he has a funky eye, almost like a doll's silver eye perhaps? Nonetheless I think it makes my Coconut more special to me, since I got that particular one. (I didn't even notice it at first, in this pic of him that I took on the 1st). ETA: A couple more photos showing off his funky eye. It's very noticeable; I'm not sure if it's just an unpainted eye or what. I think it's cute though.

How tall is Coconut? Does the head tilt in more than one direction?

How tall is Coconut? Does the head tilt in more than one direction? He is about 4 inches tall, I'd say. Only comes up the dolls' knees, I guess. His head doesn't turn. --- KERI

Yes, her head is titled so her head is cocked so she is listening to what you say. I'll try to remember to move my photos so they'll show up.

I love my Coconut! She is adorable! I got her with A.J, and she is cute! She comes with, a collar, leash (with hook that makes it able to attach to collar), and tennis ball bone. So cute!

We just purchased this. She's a very cute dog, but ours doesn't hold her bone at all. She'll hold other items just fine but not that bone, which disappointed my daughter. The leash and collar are adorable. As is the fuzzy sticker.

I love Coconut! She is awesome in every way imaginable. She is so cute. Everyone should have her! I rate her an A+! Her magnet can be a little hard to find but it is there. I got my Coconut in 2004. She is light, but I love her!

I got my coconut in 2003. I didn't like how it is hard and cant do anything. My sister has sprocket for Nicki and I would much prefer if coconut was like that. The leash broke within a month of me opening it up and I rarely play with her at all. I would give the 2001-2004 edition a C

I got Coconut for Christmas of 2005, because my mom thought it was silly to buy Coconut's 'dog' house and sleepover set for Licorice and Rascal. Since, Coconut is a puppy and Licorice and Rascal are cats. Lol! I love Coconut, she is so sweet and soft. Mine is the lightweight version.

I have Coconut and I love him but I must admit that I became a suedo-dog groomer and shaped him up. He looks so much better now. Before his hair was all wild and going in every which direction and you could barely see his eyes. I purchased him brand new but he still needed work. I give him an A-

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right section - please move it if I'm not.
We purchased the Coconut Book & Pet Package available through Amazon - it also contains Coconut's Poster Pages. Coconut comes with the same collar and tag as the AG version. At approximate $16.50, the set is a great deal.
I wasn't sure that my daughter would like Coconut once she got here - I'd read several reviews of how disappointing the hard body was. I needn't have worried - she adores that little dog. I'm sure she's going to get kinda grubby, but she's a big hit in this house.

I'm not sure if a question should go in the review section, but I couldn't figure out where else to post it. I recently bought an older Coconut with the magnetic mouth because I thought that was the only way he could hold stuff, but I was looking at some pics on here & it looks like new coconut has a slit/mouth that opens. Does he? Can the newer pups hold things too? What about the other pets?

Only the retired Coconut & Licorice had the magnetic mouth. No, there is no slit nor opening in his mouth to hold anything.
