Backpack Essentials (1998-2003) Grade: A The Good: All right, I'm not going to lie. The backpacking set is one of my all time favorite Girl of Today Sets. The accessories are no different. The backpack itself is great because it has a surprising amount of carrying space for a doll back, the closures are somewhat accurate and there's even a place for a rolled sleeping bag and your water bottle. Speaking of the water bottle, it's not one solid plastic piece like you'd expect but several separate pieces that combine to give you an authentic mini water-bottle. The Bad: While the back pack is something akin to what we had at sleepaway camp, those packs were really terrible! By the time this outfit was released, external frames weren't common - especially for kids! Everyone I knew used internal frame backpacks and they continue up until today. While I understand there are limits to what AG can do, this backpack is annoying in that it wasn't entirely accurate. However, that's a bit of a nitpicky gripe. Also, I can see the tiny pieces of the first aid kit getting lost by a child very easily. The pieces are a bit questionable, as well. I would have liked to see some anitbiotics and poison ivy aloe relief instead of the one-time use gauze pads, tape, and scissors. A wrapping bandage might have been better as well. But I'm still giving this set a high grade because the quality is so high.
