I liked the way this outfit looked from the very beginning. The jumper is excellent- color, design, print, and style wise. The shirt could be a bit crisper in its colors and texture- but who knows if it had been played with before. The shoes are fine, though I did not use them. The scrunchie I did not get. But overall I give this outfit an A-. And here is my review of the Dress Like Your Doll girl-sized version of the dress: Birthday Dress

I inherited the whole outfit from my grandma. The scrunchie is very heavy but overall is one of the best parts of the set. The outfit seems kind of dated to me, with its pattern and look overall. I'd reuse the shirt now, and maybe the scrunchie and the jellies. This outfit is okay, and just okay--it doesn't seem as well made as some other outfits. B+

This is really a very cute outfit! I got it from one of my dads co workers whose daughter stopped playing AG and the lady gave ME the stuff. Totally cute, except I am missing the jellies, but I don't mind! A+

Birthday Outfit GBOS $22 "Bet your American Girl makes a birthday wish for a fresh-fruit slipdress, jelly sandals, and a crisp white T-shirt to wear on her special day. Twist the beaded ponytail wrap in her hair and she’s ready to say “Cheese!” in every birthday snapshot." This is a cute dress for everyday and not just for parties! The dress is rayon and wrinkles easily, but it is such a cute style. It's rather wide on Mattel dolls. The buttons in the front are just for show as it has a velcro closure in the back. The shirt is cotton with purple edging around the sleeves and neck. It closes in the back with velcro. There is fruit motif screen print on the front. close-up of screen printed fruit motif The jelly shoes are so cute! They are pretty thick clear purple rubber and seem to be sturdy enough to last through quite a bit of play time. The hair elastic has dangling pink and purple beads around it. Very nicely made. Looks good on everyone. Grade A. ETA: I just noticed in the Holiday 1998 catalogue that the shirt with this dress doesn't show any fruit on the front. Maybe it originally didn't have fruit or it's just printed down too low on the shirt to be seen. Anyway, fruit on the shirt is not in the AG description as noted at the beginning of my review.

I bought this outfit for Amanda the year after it came out, in 1999. Like AGRescue, I noticed that the catalog t-shirt didn't have fruit, I was surprised mine did! The dress - This dress seems so nice and floaty and cool. These kinds of dresses were really in back then and I had one or two dresses with fruit. The pattern has oranges, grapes, pears, and watermelons. It is very thin fabric but that's appropriate for the season; the shade is a warm shade of purple. The dress velcros up the back but has tiny button details. I think this dress seems comfortable and age-appropriate. AThe t-shirt - This is made of thick cotton and has a decal with the same fruit as those on the dress. The sleeves and neck are edged with purple cotton the same shade as the dress, but the neck seems to be a bit stretched out until it's arranged correctly. Because it has a slit in the back where the velcros stops, it would be difficult to wear on its own, but I think this would probably pair well with the purple varsity jacket. And of course it looks good with the dress! AThe jellies - I had TWO pairs of jellies at this age and they were so in style! These are made of sturdy, transparent purple plastic; they don't buckle but they go on pretty easily without even stretching the plastic. I love these so much and think they are absolutely darling, even if they don't mix-and-match too well. A+The ponytail holder - This is probably the nicest piece of the outfit, heavy and with a good deal of stretch. I love the mix of beads! It looks terrific in the doll's hair (and even a human's hair) and works for several styles. A+Just adding another interesting fact, this dress was available for girls, and in the catalog it was listed under two colors, "grape" and a very pretty shade of "melon". Amanda is modeling the outfit, so you can see how it looks on a dark-haired doll:

Adding some more photos of this outfit. It took me forever to find the screenprinted tshirt, but thanks to a dear friend I finally have it. The funny thing about the jumper and tshirt is that they are both quite roomy, even on PM dolls. Stella is our chubbiest PM doll, and she still has some wiggle room. That's not necessarily a bad thing, given that AG's current trend is toward making outfits too tight, but I found it interesting. I think the outfit might seem a bit dated, not terribly so, but enough to rate it a B+ where once it might have been an A. However, I find the cheerful colors are a nice contrast to the palette AG is using these days.

I love this outfit! I even have the girl sized slip dress for me. It was my Easter dress in 1998. But I just recently got the doll sized version. Even at 28 I like to dress like my dolls. Birthday Slip Dress 1 by Elizabeth, on Flickr The necklace did not come with the outfit. I made that myself. The doll version is made just like the girls' except the buttons on the front aren't real. There is Velcro in the back. Birthday Slip Dress 3 by Elizabeth, on Flickr Close up of fruit pattern and shoes. I got this outfit from a friend when I was about 10. I didn't know what it was at the time, until she gave me a bunch of PC catalogues too. However, I only was given the shirt and dress.
Holy '90's! The dress is a colorful fruit pattern that I love. The cut, although long, has managed to retain its cool factor as I deem it "retro". It's just plain cute, and when you pair it with the shirt, even more so. I love that everything fits all girls so well, with no struggle to put anything on. The shirt can even be used as just a plain t-shirt. Hooray for mix-n-matching abilities!

This originally came with my stepsister's dolls, but it was so stained, I got rid of it. Big mistake! That left my modern doll as the only one without a nice springtime outfit, so I found this on eBay again. The shirt's a little stained, but it could probably be washed, and the eBay lot didn't come with the scrunchie. I remember wearing outfits like this in the mid-late 90s and seeing other girls in them at the time, too, up to and including the jelly sandals, so it does win points for at-the-time accuracy. (In fact, I had a few scrunchies like the original one that came with this outfit in different colors.)
This is highly recommended as one of the few modern outfits that look good on and fit just about every doll out there, from the plumpest PM to the thinnest Mattel. The shoes and shirt allow for some versatility, and while the style is kind of dated all together, it's not so dated that it doesn't still look cute.
