This outfit is worn by Julie in the books Changes for Julie and Julie Tells Her Story. It was released in 2007 and retired in 2015. At its release, it was often paired with her Cap & Scarf.Julie hangs out in the popular, free-flowing styles of her day. She'll be ready for a school day or an afternoon helping out her mom at Gladrags in this outfit that features: An orange tunic with a split neck trimmed in red, a floral embroidered front, and bell-shaped sleeves, Wide-cut, purple corduroy gauchos that fall just below the knees, Tall Western-style boots with decorative stitching on the sides.Julie's Casual outfit goes with the changes for Julie book and you can see it many times throughout the book with Julie wearing it. When I first saw this outfit, I thought, "Holy snap, that it the ugliest whatever that thing is I've ever seen." But gradually, it grew on me. You see, anyone can love purple corduroy gauchos!
So about the outfit. The top is cute, and looks good with the jeans that Julie arrives in. The gauchos are...tolerable. They actually look more like gauchos and less like a big ugly skirt like they did in the premiere photos. But corduroy is just not my favorite material. Still, they look alright. The boots are kind of hard to get on, but not annoyingly frustrating or anything. It does not take more than a minute to push them on.
So yes, call it ugly if you like, along with the rest of 1970s. But I like it. My mom also says that it's historically accurate, if that means anything to anyone. ...I don't think it does.
Grade: B
The boots close with velcro.

I think my Julie looks adorable in her outfit, and I got the hat and scarf, too. I am not, however, fond of the velcro in the back of the boots. Makes it hard to get them on. A side zip is so much easier for...say...AG's target audience to do IMO.

It took CyberMonday for me to get this outfit and the first thing I did was compare it to Saige's tunic set that was released this year. Both tunics are made of the same fabric, or close to it. The cut of this older outfit is much, much more generous, all around. The Embroidery is far superior and the cuffs and neckline have some fringe/serging to give it more detail. Kind of sad as one can clearly see the corners (and material) cut from when this outfit was made to 2014, when Saige comes out with a tunic. Tunics were worn a lot in the 70s and still are around these days, still worn by many of us who wore them in the 70s. Still, the Sparkley tunic that AG made for MyAG line is superior in my opinion because of the fabric used in that as opposed to plain old cotton. I think tunics need the flow of that gauzy fabric to give it that comfy look. I know I would not have bought one made of this stiffer material
But it looks great. For Julie, it's a must piece, IMO, as she wears it quite a bit in her stories. It looks terrific with jeans, no reason not to have this versatile top. A lot of other dolls can wear it and look terrific too. I don't have a Julie and I have a number of candidates for this.
The gaucho pants, well,..I don't like them personally, never wore them in the 70s or ever, nor did anyone I personally know wear them that I remember. But they were around and worn then, and part of the Julie story. I guess I'll give them to my 60s girl. Don't see these often these days, though anything goes today. The pants are well made and a lovely, deep plum color, so would go well with most anything, colorwise.
The boots are terrific. They can be worn fashionably today as well as in the 70s. Love those boots and at the prices AG charge for boots, these are a steal getting full outfit for just a bit more.
I give the outfit a C as it just isn't all that attractive all together and there are surely better looking pieces for AG to have found from the 70s, but the qulaity is there in the embroidery and cut Could have done better with a gauzy fabric. The gaucho pants, though nice, are not something 10 year olds wore very often back then. I know, I was there. The boots are an A+.
