This outfit is worn by Kirsten in the book Meet Kirsten. Released in 1989, retired in 2002.This is the outfit Kirsten wore on the long, hard boat ride from Sweden to America. Its traditional striped skirt is topped with a peasant blouse of unbleached muslin. Decorative laces close the front of the plaid vest. Cover her head with the flowered kerchief when the cold ocean winds blow. B-r-r-r.I love the dirndl because it's so realistic looking. The colors look great on Kirsten, and the lacing on the front is so detailed. It would be better if it really laced up, instead of velcro, but I still love this dress. I know it also comes with a kerchief, which I need to order from replacement parts. Edited to add that mine is a gray market outfit, but since I've loved it from the good ol' P.C. days, I don't really mind. I just LOVE how it looks on Kirsten and every doll I try it on. Kirsten looks so sweet in this dress!! I have to give it an A+! Sweet #16 in this outfit, paired with Kirsten's meet bonnet:

This is another great Kirsten outfit! I know this outfit is probably mostly made as a Pleasant Company item, but it's a little snug on my PM girl! It doesn't look bad though, and she looks so adorable in it.

This outfit is one of my favorites. I searched ebay for months for a great bargain on this and ended up getting it in a lot of AGT stuff. My 1988 Kirsten loves this outfit.

I'm in the minority. I don't like this outfit. It's not historically accurate for Kirsten's time and the velcro wore out pretty quickly. It was tight around the waist and it was made only a few years after I got Kirsten. She never wears it anymore. The blouse and kerchief are quite nice though! The early version I have has yarn lacing and a floral scarf. There's nothing really wrong with the quality, except the velcro and the sizing, so I will grade it: A-

Well, I have to say I don't think mine is an AG original, I got it on Ebay and there are no AG tags on it, but I don't mind, it looks close enough if not exactly like the real one (I have never seen a tagged one in person, so I don't know how close they are)
Still very adorable, one of my favorite Kirsten outfits

I just got my Kirsten so I could finally try on my recent eBay purchase. I just love the dirndl outfit! The fabric feels wonderful, and while each piece is rather bland separately, when it is put together on Kirsten, it looks absolutely adorable! It fits my brand-new Kirsten perfectly - nothis too tight or too loose. The blouse is well-finished, and I like the full sleeves. I too would prefer if the vest really did lace up the front, but I can understand how easily the lacing could get lost. I'm willing to compromise when the results are this cute.

For some odd reason I was ubsessed with this outfit when I was a kid. I was realy into the lace up "corset" look and I liked that it had a seperate blouse so I saved up and got it for my Kirsten when I was young and I am glad I did because I realy like this set. I just seems like something very practical for and cute on Kirsten! The only downside that I can think of is that that it does not lace up in the front, just more velcro in the back, joy...more velcro!

Another A+ from me. I am a sucker for things Scandinavian. The ribbons are adorable and have lasted. The unbleached muslin gives it an extra touch.

Did this item come with hair ribbons? No, it didn't come with hair ribbons. Kirsten's cream birthday ribbons and her blue school ribbons go nicely with this outfit.

I love this outfit so much and was determined to buy it on Ebay! The vest - very thick, soft plaid material, made of two layers folded. It would keep Kirsten warm! The laces are not real, only black nylon cording stitched up the front; the vest velcros in the back. It fits easily over the blouse, but it's not wool like described in the book. As part of the outfit it gets an A. The skirt - another very soft piece, but instead of plaid it is striped in coordinating colors. It looks nice with the blouse without the vest, too. Along with the vest, both pieces match Kirsten's indigo school ribbons. AThe blouse - the blouse is very similar to Kirsten's winter blouse, but instead of flannel it is made of rustic-looking ivory muslin. The specks make it seem so wonderfully old-fashioned! The collar is folded down and tends to have a scallop, very nice. This piece makes the outfit match Kirsten's cream ribbons, too. AThe kerchief - a contrasting paisley print, it brings out the blue of the rest of the outfit. We don't usually use it because it can look kind of strange on Kirsten's head, but it will also work as a shawl. A-

The top scarf in pevensie's review is identical to the scarf in the 1993 Holiday catalog. It is like the scarf with my 1994-tagged outfit as well. I have a second outfit somewhere, I will have to find it so I can see if they are the same.
The whole outfit (with the exception of the scarf) is very soft. It is snug (not tight) on my PM doll. I am not sure that you could put her flannel underwear underneath. The scarf is a large triangle, held to the light, you can "see" through the fabric. You can wrap it around her shoulders and pin or tuck the ends in place, they are not long enough to tie. The point comes below her rear when the scarf is worn this way. I loved the outfit the minute I saw it (way, way back in the day), and consider it worth the money. I wouldn't pay an obscene amount (it retailed for $22 originally), but if you can find one under $50 and can afford it, go for it!

I can't be 100% correct, but I'm pretty sure that the bottom scarf from Pevensie's review is actually the later version (95 and on). This is based on some research I did and people I asked on ebay about the year of their dirndle sets.
If I'm wrong please feel free to correct me. This is just based off of my research. I wasn't able to find a site that I trusted that talked about this.

I like this outfit a great deal but I am a total sucker for the look of lacing on anything, even if mostly decorative. The fabric is incredibly soft on this piece, and you can just imagine it being well-worn and feeling like home to Kirsten. The piece was marketed for a brief period as "the outfit Kirsten wore on the long, hard boat ride from Sweden to America" and it has a special place in my heart for that reason, ranking it right up there as an iconic must-have Kirsten piece even if it is not part of her core collection. It links Kirsten's past with her new life in America. Totally A+ and well worth searching for on eBay at a cost you can live with if you've a mind to add it to your Kirsten treasures. This set does seem to appear regularly enough on the grey market at comparatively reasonable prices, although I've never seen one to compare to the original.

My outfit might be grey market but the woman at the doll show I bought it from had several in AG bags with the right code on the sticker and hangers, so at least some of them had to be real. Grey market or not, the quality is great and I am happy to have gotten it for a reasonable price. The skirt is striped in burgundy and blue with a bit of gold and dark grey, it is a soft flannel and is nice and full with growth tucks in it. The blouse is a heavy unbleached cotton and is nicely done with very full sleeves, it has velcro up the back and at the cuffs. The vest is the same soft flannel as the skirt and in the same basic colours but it is a plaid pattern instead of stripes, it is lined in the same material, has velcro up the back and a sewn down faux lacing up the front. I would like it better if it really laced, but I am very pleased with it anyways. The kerchief is a flowered navy calico and ties over dolly hair nicely, it is made well but is otherwise unimpressive. The outfit looks good over Addy's red petticoat (it's a tight fit, but it does all fasten) and as I don't have Kirsten or her dreadful meet boots I use Kit's Work Boots, not perfectly historically accurate, but it looks like the picture in my copy of Meet Kirsten. A+

I got mine off the AG site, so it's the real deal! However, I lost the kerchief a long time ago, and I hardly even remember what it was like. So you will get a review of the items that I do have for it! The blouse is made of a thick, unbleached muslin. It's quite lovely with its stand-up collar, and it has a very natural look. Like all of Kirsten's tops, I find it easy to put on. The bodice is of a checked material. It has a velcro back closure, which keeps the sewn-in front lacing looking good in the front and keeps it quick and easy to dress her in. The skirt is striped in coordinating colors and made of a thinner, softer material than the rest of her dress. I think the pieces look lovely together. This dress is also an important part of her story, and I'm glad to have it!

I wound up with multiple of these after buying one buy itself on eBay and getting the others with lots. Here is a PC one where the kerchief had been lost: Here's an AG one that's complete: And another one!

Such a realistic an appropriate dress for Kirsten. This was my daughter's set. The kerchief looks darling tied around Kirsten's head.
