Isabelle's Makeup Set
Item# BJY69
Isabelle has everything she needs to shine in the spotlight! This shiny black case features fancy scrollwork and a metallic "Isabelle" graphic. Plus, it has a mirrored top compartment and two additional drawers to store her gear. The complete set includes:
A black makeup case with multiple compartments
A pretend makeup palette built into the bottom drawer
A makeup brush
Pretend lip gloss
A sparkly purple hair pick
A doll-sized faux spray bottle
Six hairbands
Two sheets of nail stickers to give Isabelle a temporary manicure
Two sheets of "gem" stickers to decorate the case
$36
Initially, I expected to be disappointed by Isabelle's Makeup Set, as I knew it would be all plastic and is very pricey. However, after seeing it in person in Columbus, I decided to go ahead and buy. Darn LE items. Anyway, I'm quite smitten with everything about this set, except the price tag. I'll review each item separately below.
The makeup case
The case is a fairly solid black hard plastic. It will hold up to average play, I think, but probably not to being dropped from more than a foot or two off the ground. The Isabelle sticker doesn't really seem to be a sticker. It will not peel off. It seems to be embedded into the plastic, as the borders are flush to the case and very smooth. Great for not having the sticker peel. Not so great for those who don't have an Isabelle or who have renamed their Isabelle. The top opens to reveal a nice storage area and mirror. It will hold all the set comes with and more. I plan to use it to store doll earrings, hair clips, and other jewelry items. The mirror is a nice quality real mirror with a cute design around the edges. It doesn't warp the reflected image, like some mirror stickers. Both drawers open smoothly and the top drawer has enough space to store small items such as earrings. The second drawer has pretend eyeshadows and blushes. These are not real makeup, thankfully! It also has a space to store the included makeup brush. The size compared to a doll is appropriate, in my opinion. Grade: A due to price.
Top Drawer
Bottom Drawer
All the included accessories
Elastic hair bands
These are standard AG hair elastics. They stretch well enough. I am happy they are real hair ties versus the very thin rubber bands that remind me of the kind used for braces. Good variety of colors. Grade: B.
Spray bottle
This is adorable! It does not open to put water inside, but the pump does depress to "spray". It's made of nice plastic and has a design on one side and says Isabelle on the other side. Probably my favorite item in the whole set! I just love that it pretend sprays! It adds to the realism and is what I expect from AG. Grade: A+
Lip gloss
Also pretty cute! It is made of a rubbery or silicone material and feels squishy like you would expect for a tube of lip gloss. The cap is not removable, and is a harder plastic. It also has Isabelle inscribed on it in silver. It's not quite as bright pink as it appears in the image, but the material is very vaguely translucent and so the light from the room reflects to make it seem brighter than it is. It is still a little brighter than what I would consider allowing a 10 year old to use for every day wear, but it's probably fine for stage makeup, which of course is what this set is all about. This is probably my second favorite piece in the set. Too cute! Grade: A for a still quite bright lip gloss.
Hair pick
Not much to say here. This is a miniature version of the sparkly hair pick AG offers. The bristles are metal, and it seems pretty solid. It took some shoving, but I have been able to get this pick between the fingers of a doll. Grade: A.
Stickers
I didn't take an individual photo of these. They're typical AG stickers. I'm not a fan of putting stickers on my stuff including the fingernail polish stickers. There are two sets of decorative stickers and two sets of fingernail stickers. No toenail stickers are included. Grade: C+.
Merry wearing Isabelle's Sparkle Dress and using the makeup set
Final thoughts: yes, this set is plastic in its entirety. I'm not super bummed about that, as I use a plastic make up case for my own make up. This reminds me of some of the Caboodles brand items that I loved as a kid and still enjoy using to store my makeup and skin care products. I think at $36, the set is slightly pricey, but considering how many playable pieces there are for the dolls to hold, it feels much more worthwhile than say, Isabelle's dance case in my opinion. All the items seem to be sized appropriately. I enjoyed posing Merry with them and will continue to enjoy having my dolls give each other makeovers. Overall grade: A
